Mets owner Steve Cohen writes angry tweet about Steven Matz’s deal with Cardinals: ‘I guess words and promises don’t matter’
What may at first seem funny and disparate to one owner, Mets owner Steve Cohen’s Twitter account quickly became scathing, controversial, and tiresome for many – and a tweet which he posted on Wednesday morning added to that story.
According to Cohen, the Mets are about to reunite with Steven Matz, who wore orange and blue from 2015 to 2020, 31-41 with a score of 4.35 in 579 2/3 innings. However, Matz opted to sign a four-year, $44 million deal with the Cardinals instead, much to Cohen’s exclamation.

Matz spent last season in Toronto and had one of the best years of his career. He won 14-7 with a 3.82 ERA while beating 144 in 150 2/3 innings.
The Mets apparently made the same offer to Matz with the team from St. Louis, along with several other teams, before he chose to join the Cardinals.
The Mets have recommended Matz, but so have seven other teams. Ultimately, he liked the fit with the Cardinals, who played less than a five-hour drive from his full-time home in Nashville. Credit to @JeffPassan First about signing.

In response to Cohen’s tweet, Rob Martin, a representative for Matz, released a statement.
Martin also apparently spoke to Cohen on Wednesday morning and seemed to ease the tension and ease any beef concerns between the two.
I spoke with Rob Martin, agent for Steven Matz. He said he called Steve Cohen this morning after Cohen’s tweet. He said that he thought the tension/hostility had subsided after the conversation. He said that he, Matz and his agency have no hatred/animosity towards #Mets.

So far, the Mets haven’t made a big splash in free agency after losing longtime No. 2 star Noah Syndergaard to the Angels and thus failing to find a deal for Michael Conforto and Javier Baéz to return. Citi Field.
