Mercedes-Benz clears G-Class backlog, reopens orders

Mercedes-Benz Australia has announced it has reopened orders for the Mercedes-AMG G63, almost two years after it close them due to long delivery times.

Customers who place an order today for a new G63 can receive a vehicle as early as November.

A spokesperson from Mercedes-Benz Australia told CarExpert it predicts an influx of orders could push deliveries out to January/February 2024.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has not confirmed how many built spots are available.

Pricing has been adjusted to reflect updates to the Luxury Vehicle Tax, and the G63 now retails for $363,561 before on-road costs – a reduction of $1530.

Despite this reduction, since 2021 Mercedes-Benz has increased its pricing on the G-Class by $74,561.

Earlier this year, Mercedes-AMG released a limited edition G63 Edition 55 which a spokesperson confirms sold out “immediately”.

There’s just one G-Class variant available now in Australia, following the discontinuation of the Mercedes-Benz G400d after only around 12 months on the market.

The Mercedes-Benz G400d first arrived in Australian Mercedes-Benz dealers in July 2021, joining the substantially more popular Mercedes-AMG G63 that arrived in 2018.

While the company took (and honoured) some G400d orders, the vast majority of G-Wagen buyers here opted for the wild AMG G63.

Looking to the future, Mercedes-Benz revealed the “near-production” electric Concept EQG in September 2021, with evolutionary looks and the promise of enough off-road ability to match combustion-powered G-Wagens.

A production Mercedes-Benz EQG is expected to be revealed in 2024. We’ve already had a ride-along in a camouflaged prototype, and also spied a number of prototypes.

This electric G-Class will have a quad-electric motor setup and will be based on a variation of the regular G-Class’s traditional body-on-frame underpinnings.

The production version of the Mercedes-Benz EQG will be built alongside the combustion G-Class at partner Magna Steyr’s plant in Graz, Austria.
