Designer. Creative director. Founder. Melissa Medvedich wears many hats, but a consistency woven throughout her career shines brighter than her impressive titles. Passion and promise of innovation are evident in all of Medvedich’s work, and while many people, after achieving a certain level of success, are satisfied with their laurels. , Medvedich’s insatiable curiosity helps her rise to new heights. And she’s just getting started.

In a world where businesses need nothing but an Instagram handle to go viral and concepts can go from abstract to physical product overnight, it’s rare to see merchandise that’s truly recognizable. considered thorough. Medvedich takes an opposite approach. As the founder of Supersonic, a line of plant-based skin care products, she combines a keen interest in beauty with her designer eye. The result is not only a beautifully crafted collection, but a fascinating and immersive lesson in what small-scale and sustainable skin care can do for the health of our skin and the health of our skin. Earth.

With the intention of guiding her path, no wonder Medvedich firmly introduces high-quality, supportive options to the wider world of skin care. And the same is true for all beauty lovers, where while products alone have interest and appeal, the fascination lies in ritual and routine as well. Growing up in a Chinese family, Medvedich learned to respect her skin, watching as her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother used their products carefully and meticulously. Curiosity quickly turns to passion, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Always fascinated by the activities, habits, and lives of the women we admire, we spoke to Medvedich about redirecting her career from design to launching a care brand. her own skin care routine, the morning routines that keep her grounded and focused, and the way she fosters a life of presence, joy, and inspiration. Connect work with passion

Tell us about your company, Supernal. What prompted you to launch a purposeful brand?

When I look back on my career before Supernal, I feel very fortunate that I had the opportunity to work in the field of design, a great love of mine. Before 2017, I had never freelanced or worked for myself. But after several years of daydreaming and circling the idea, I decided it was finally time to build my own business. Starting something related to my experience in design or creative direction seemed like the most logical transition – but when it comes to being completely honest with yourself and fantasizing about your dream company I knew I wanted to pursue building a beauty brand.

I’ve been curious about skin care since I was a kid. Over time and as I learned more, it turned into another passion. When I decided to switch careers, I went back to school to study botanical beauty recipes and become a certified aromatherapist. After a lot of testing over the years, I have discovered that plant-based products are the most effective for my skin. I envisioned Supernal as a tight fix of daily staples as my diet also became more minimal.

Trust is the foundation of any business endeavor. With skincare, it’s truly an honor to have a client trust you with their skin and help someone take care of their skin. I never take it for granted and it’s what drives me every day.

After two years of dedicated research and development, and a lot of freelance work to help fund the business, Supernal was launched in 2019 with a single hero product, Cosmic Glow Oil. (Our second product, Illumine, launched last summer.)

Let’s start the morning routine of Melissa Medvedich…

What does a typical day look like to you?

When I worked full-time in the media industry, there was a relatively regular and predictable publishing cycle. Supernal is still a family run business and it’s really a good change that every day is a little bit different. I switch between product production and research and development for future services to allow enough days of administration and creativity. This can range from operations and supply chain management to designing our weekly newsletter or doing brand photo sessions with my husband.

When do you get up?

I usually wake up between 7am and 7:15am and try to get 8 hours of sleep. Anything over 8 o’clock is hero status. After getting out of bed, the first thing I do is take a shower, which wakes me up completely.

What rituals help you achieve success before entering the workday?

I really love my morning cup of coffee. I’ll organize my thoughts for the day while I’m enjoying it. I drink a cup of coffee every day. Taking 15-20 minutes to enjoy it is a constant morning. I may not be consistent with this practice, but I do believe in the benefits of meditation and the power of the breath. I think a few minutes of these will help start the day with a great note.

I recently had a virtual session with Nadia Jose amazing — I love her philosophy and approach. I am also trying to get into the habit of daily stretching in the morning more regularly.

Describe your morning beauty routine from start to finish.

I do a thorough cleaning twice and some sort face massage in the evening. In the morning, I would just wash my face again in the shower. We have an Aquasana shower filter and I’m not sure if it’s science or psychology, but I feel like I’ve noticed an improvement in my skin and hair dryness since we switched to using it a while ago. years.

The first product I apply to clean and damp skin is a face mist. Currently, I am using Biologique Recherche L’Eauxygenante, but I have used and loved the Lesse Regeneration Mist, and Pratima also has a very nice Ratrani Rose Replenishing Mist. Depending on the condition of my skin, I would mix together or layer Illumine and Cosmic Glow Oil. During the colder months, if I feel like my skin needs extra protection from the weather, I’ll coat Cosmic Glow over Illumine, and in the warmer months I’ll coat with a single coat of both. .

If I have to go out for a long time, I add sunscreen as a last layer. I still haven’t found the perfect sunscreen for me, (I feel like they’ve all worked in my favor in the end). But my friend Sofia Pavitt iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30 was introduced recently. This is the next product on my list to try.

What do you eat in the morning?

This varies with the seasons, but in general I prefer reheated food for my first meal of the day. Sometimes, my grandmother would send me home with participation, is a Chinese rice porridge that is loved and enjoyed for breakfast. Recently, I was also in a soft eggs Mix that I would have with a dinner leftover, usually baked potatoes or another grilled vegetable.

What do you always have in the fridge?

Habanero Tabasco and Mango Sauce.

What are your favorite books?

My favorite books often involve color with diagrams or photos. Interaction of colors by Josef Alberts and The atlas has rare and familiar colors are two favorites. I’ve always loved to read, and I go through periods where I’m in the mood for a fun, fantasy beach, reading from this type of book to non-fiction like Breathe: The New Science of a Lost Art, it was the last entertaining book that I read and enjoyed. Since starting the business, most of my reading time has shifted to a more Superman focus and spans things like researching new ingredients to learning Gua Sha facial techniques.

What do you do each day to live with more presence and intent?

It’s a simple thing, but there’s no work or equipment in the meal.

If you could credit your success to one thing, what would it be?

My loved ones believed in me.

What is the most influential truth you have learned over the past year?

I have learned to be more adaptive and flexible in my thinking. Patience is indeed a virtue.
