For the third year in a row, Mazda’s The entire lineup has obtained the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash test. All cars – car Mazda 3 in both sedan and hatchback form, as well as CX-30, CX-5and CX-9 SUV – won the Top Safety Pick+ award, the top award given by IIHS.
The IIHS performs six tests on each vehicle – one moderately overlapping frontal crash, two small overlapping frontal collisions for both driver and passenger, one side crash, roof strength assessment and headrest test using car seats only. Results are ranked out of four levels, with a green “Good” marker indicating the top tier. Mazda said that CX-5it’s been 5 years and has remained essentially unchanged since its 2017 introduction, being the first vehicle to receive a “Good” score on the IIHS’ tougher lateral impact test, something that won’t affect results until 2023.
However, one green results school is not enough to earn the top IIHS ranking. Mazda also received high marks for the standard automatic forward collision warning and brake, was effective in tests to prevent exposure to other vehicles, adult pedestrians, and children. Mazdas also received a maximum rating for the child seat LATCH system. The only area where Mazda softened was in models not equipped with curve-adaptive headlights, including the lower headlights on CX-5 and 3 models. There, Mazda received an “Acceptable” rating. received” from start to finish.
Unsurprisingly, the company’s cars are similarly priced. Currently, this car company only has two platforms. Both of the 3’s body styles share the same background with CX-30while the CX-5 and CX-9 are all based on the same basic structure. The upcoming Mazda platforms will be based on a new front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive architecture. That’s when things start to get really interesting, no matter what they do in the crash tests.
