Match: Bryson vs. format. Brooks, explained: In-game scoring and other golf rules to know

The biggest feud in golf this year between Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka will be at the center of the fifth edition of “Match“on Friday, November 26th.

The format for this edition of “The Match” will reflect what the 2021 Ryder Cup uses in one-on-one golf matches. It will be a bit simpler than other versions of “The Match” in previous years.

However, the biggest difference of this fall event is that the two golfers will only play a round of 12 holes, not all 18 holes.

Sporting News has presented you with a breakdown of the rules, formats and scoring system that will be used in the “Match”.

Matching rules and formats

The “5th match” will follow the match format for the entire round. This will only be the second time in “The Match” history that the match will be the only format. The last match used was the first between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

What is golf?

Similar to what is used in one-on-one competitions in the Ryder Cup, players will compete to shoot the lowest score per hole. One point will be awarded to whoever shoots the lowest number of points on the individual hole. If they tie into a hole, that hole will be halved. Whoever wins the most holes at the end of 12 holes wins.

In the first edition of “The Match,” Woods and Mickelson went into four pits of sudden death because they were tied at the end of 18 holes. It is believed that DeChambeau and Koepka would do the same if they were tied at the end of 12 holes.

How does in-match scoring work?

Whoever wins the loss earns a point, while the loser gets no point. If two golfers hit the same spot on the same hole, they each get half a point. Unlike regular golf, whoever has the highest score at the end of 12 holes wins the match.

The winner may win before all 12 holes are played. For example, if a golfer is up two holes with one hole to go, they will end the game because they will win.
