Man dies after being restrained by members of the public outside York jewelry store | UK News

A man has died after being restrained by members of the public outside a jewelry store in downtown York.

Police were called to Mappin & Webb jeweler on Coney Street around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday following several reports of a disturbance at the store.

Samuel Diatta, 39, a local man, is being restrained by a store employee and members of the public.

And after experiencing medical difficulties, he was taken to York County Hospital, where he died at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Three men, two in their 40s and one in their 50s, were arrested in connection with the incident and were released on bail after questioning.

Detective Inspector Steve Menzies of North Yorkshire Police said: “This is a very tragic incident.

“Samuel’s family is being supported by specially trained officers and I ask for their privacy to be respected so they have time to grieve their loss.

“I also know that there have been some inaccurate reports of what happened, which is heartbreaking for the family.

“We ask people not to speculate or spread inaccurate information.

“However, it is important that we speak to anyone who witnessed this incident, or who saw Mr Diatta shortly before the incident.”
