Major incident announced by Greater Manchester Police after bodies were found at factory following Oldham fire | UK News

Human remains have been found at a factory in Greater Manchester following a fire as police declared a major incident.

Officials say four Vietnamese are missing and may be linked to a fire at the site two months ago.

It took firefighters four days to put out the blaze on May 7 and at the time it was thought no one was inside the Bismark House Mill, Bower Street, in Oldham.

But last Thursday, police received a tip that four Vietnamese were missing and could be burned.

And on Saturday, human body parts were discovered by demolition workers in the building.

Assistant Superintendent of Police for Greater Manchester (GMP), Rob Potts, said: “While work to confirm the identity of the deceased is underway, we are liaising with partner agencies to ensure Potential family members in Vietnam are fully informed and supported.

“I can reassure members of the public that this has been declared a major incident to ensure both GMP and partner agencies respond to this incident in the most effective manner and that the appropriate personnel are involved. The department is following every line of investigation to confirm the identity of the deceased, if anyone else was inside the factory during the fire, and the overall circumstances surrounding that fire.”

He urged anyone with information to contact the investigative team directly or anonymously through Crimestoppers.

He added: “They are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who knows how the building was used up until May 7 or who has information about the fire itself.”

Anyone with information should submit it via the major incident public portal or call 0161 856 0055 quoting Operation Logan.

Information may also be shared anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Anyone concerned about a missing loved one should contact the Accident Bureau. UK callers should call 0800 051 4675, while international callers should call 020 459 4500.

The matter has been referred to the GMP Professional Standards Branch for review due to previous contact regarding the fire and missing persons.
