Okay, the whole thing might not be quite pay-per-view, but Luis Ortiz-Charles Martin’s heavyweight scraps tomorrow night are at least an entertaining way to celebrate the new year. . While they may not be on the level of Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk (Joshua knocked Martin out), basically every boxer knows this is his chance to prove he’s still worthy of a fight. another shot at a world title (Who knows? Jersey Joe Walcott it took a long time before he finally proved he was worthy of the heavyweight crown). Again, it’s hard to argue that this is pay-per-view (which, sadly, isn’t the case), but try to imagine it as a bout of basic PBC cabling to see why. deserve attention.
With an impressive 32-2 record, Ortiz, who studied in Cuba, is now 42 years old, although some wouldn’t be surprised if the man is closer than a decade. He is an excellent warrior, Ortiz, skilled and possessing heavy hands. He also has a burning determination. Ortiz’s two losses both came from Deontay Wilder’s thunderous punches. If you take the name Tyson Fury out of the equation, you will realize that losing to Wilder is not a source of shame. The Alabaman may have been the heaviest battle in history.
As for Martin, with a record of 28-2-1 and at the age of 35, he can boast of having won a world championship – before Joshua appeared, of course – which is impressive even though no matter how you look. He also lost to tough Adam Kownacki, but anyone who wants to worship before the altar of perfect records in this day and age is probably looking in the wrong era. Mayweather is retired anyway, and Tyson Fury, Errol Spence, and Terence Crawford are basically the only boxers right now with a perfect track record who have actually weathered the figurative flames. And, as great as they are, perfect records are not the selling point they have been under Mayweather’s reign.
The Bottom Line – Watching Ortiz-Martin would be a great way to spend the first evening of 2022 if it were broadcast on Fox’s flagship station instead of Fox’s pay-per-view. Sadly, watching this heavyweight bout is now simply a good way to get through the night. Still, it’s an interesting match I’m looking forward to.
