US President Joe Biden will travel to Poland for a two-day visit to mark the one year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukrainereturned to the region as the war entered a tumultuous new phase without a clear path to peace.

Biden will travel to Warsaw on Tuesday, where he will meet with Polish President Andrzej Duda, the White House said in a statement Sunday.

“The President will deliver a speech ahead of the one-year anniversary of Russia’s brutal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, mentioning that the United States has rallied the world to support the people of Ukraine as they defend their freedoms. and our democracy, and how we will continue. stand with the Ukrainian people for as long as possible,” the statement read.

A year ago, Biden urgently warned a sometimes skeptical world that Russia’s massive military buildup along the Ukrainian border was a harbinger of war. At the time, even some in his government questioned his ability to resist a Ukrainian invasion, predicting the capital Kyiv was about to fall.

Instead, Ukrainian fighters held the capital and continued to fend off Russian attempts to control the territory, aided by vast amounts of Western weapons, ammunition and equipment. The war has turned into a bitter conflict that US officials say could drag on for months or even years.

It shaped Biden’s foreign policy, reverberating consequences in the global economy, and led to a newly formed unity between the United States and its European allies.

Biden aides have been planning for several weeks how they will mark the anniversary of the invasion, including potentially a significant address. They hope to emphasize the resilience of the Ukrainian people while emphasizing the importance of solidarity in the uncertain months ahead.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is now preparing for an expected Russian offensive in the spring, calling on Western governments for additional support and weapons to help keep the war going.
