The murder of four University of Idaho students in November at their off-campus home spurred investigative efforts by the FBI, state police, and city police in Moscow.
Now federal law enforcement officials told CNN that a suspect has been arrested.
this is a timeline of some important events in case:
November 12: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle are University of Idaho students living in an off-campus residential area in Moscow, a college town of about 25,000 people. They have two other roommates in a three-story, six-bedroom apartment.
That night, Chapin and Kernodle party on campus, and Mogen and Goncalves go to a downtown bar, police said.
November 13: Mogen and Goncalves ordered at a late-night snack cart around 1:41 a.m., Food truck’s Twitch live stream. As they waited for their food, they could be seen chatting with each other and with other people standing next to the truck.
Joseph Woodall, 26, the truck’s manager, said the two students did not appear to be in an accident or in any danger.
Chapin and Kernodle are said to have returned home around 1:45 a.m., while Goncalves and Mogen held a private party to ride home around 1:56 a.m. follow the police.
Two other uninjured housemates woke up the next morning and called friends to the house because they believed one of the victims had passed out and hadn’t woken up. A call to 911 was made shortly before noon about an unconscious person at the residence, police said.
Upon arrival, police found the door of the house open and discovered the bodies of four students who had been stabbed to death.
Police said there were no signs of rape or damage.
November 15th: Moscow Police issue a statement states that a “knife-edged weapon” was used in the murders. Police said no suspects were in custody and no murder weapons were found.
November 16: Sheriff James Fry held a press conference – the department’s first press conference in the case – and reiterated that there are no suspects. He also noted that two other roommates who were at home at the time of the attack were uninjured. The head said the administration is not focused on them.
“We’re focusing on everyone who can get to and from that residence,” he told reporters.
November 18: Investigators said they identified the victims as “likely asleep” before they were attacked.
They said detectives then conducted 38 interviews with people who “may have information” about the murders and took the contents of three trash cans near the house in case they had evidence. Investigators also asked local businesses if there had been any recent purchases of “fixed-blade knives,” according to police updates.
Hoping to get advice from the community, investigators released maps and timelines of the victims’ movements late last week. The map shows that the four students spent most of the night separating into pairs.
November 20th: Police have given 646 tips and conducted more than 90 interviews, Sheriff Fry said at a news conference. He declined to identify who made the 911 call from the house where the students were killed, saying only that the call came from the phone of one of the surviving roommates. He would not confirm who made the call, but said the caller was not a suspect.
November 30: Moscow police release list of people they believe is not related to the crime, including two surviving roommates, a man in the Grub Truck surveillance video, the private driver who brought Goncalves and Mogen home, the man Goncalves and Mogen called several times the night of them killed and anyone at home when 911 is called. The police believe that the attack was indeed “targeted”, but The investigator has not concluded yet if the target is a residence or its inhabitants.
December 5th: On the possibility that Goncalves may have a stalker, police say investigators identify an incident in October, in which two men were seen at a business and a man appeared to follow Goncalves inside and as she exited her car. The man did not contact her.
Investigators contacted both men and were told they were trying to meet women at the business. Detectives said they believed this was an isolated incident and not some kind of stalking and said there was no evidence the men were involved in the murder.
December 7th: Investigators say they want to speak to the occupants or occupants of a white 2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra that was discovered near the crime scene around the time of the murder.
