The best way to test a product is to put it in a wringer and use it multiple times over several days and in many different driving situations. 16,200 miles, 53 days, 48 states trip should qualify. For your information, I own both the Klim Badlands and Klim Latitude jacket/pants and have used both on cross-state trips of over 10,000 miles.
Here are my requirements for riding gear in order of importance: It must be safe and protective; it must be waterproof; it must be comfortable in both hot and cold weather; and it must be stylish and attractive.
Klim’s Latitude jacket and pants feature a Gore-Tex performance shell, as well as 600D Cordura overlays at the shoulders, knees, seat, and hem. They feature perforated goatskin overlays on the inside elbows and knees, and stretchy Gore-Tex in high-motion areas for added mobility. The Latitude line is now in its fifth generation, with improvements to comfort and adjustability.
Luckily, I can’t comment on the safety/protection aspect since I’ve never had a chance to test it. However, the Latitude comes with Level 1 D3O armor on the back, elbows, and shoulders of the jacket and on the knees and hips of the pants. On my 48-state trip, I rode in temperatures ranging from 40 degrees to 105 degrees and through pouring rain and scorching winds. The Latitude kept me dry and warm when needed. The waterproof vents work well—just remember to zip them up before heading into a storm!
Klim added dual 7-inch vents that allow for extra airflow up your arms to cool you down quickly and efficiently. I felt comfortable using this venting method up to 90 degrees. Above 90 degrees, I used Klim Touch Mesh Jacket. To be clear, I ride the 2018 Honda Goldwing Tour with very good wind protection, so on other bikes with less wind protection, you can increase that comfort zone by 5-10 degrees.
In the front left cargo pocket, the Latitude has an internal elasticized pocket designed for your wallet. This extra security is a welcome addition. All the pockets have waterproof zippers, so I can throw my keys in one of the pockets, zip it up, and never have to worry about it again.
When comparing Latitude and Arid gear, both work as designed. However, I find the Latitude to be more user-friendly for the traveling public. Once off the bike, I found the Latitude jacket and pants more comfortable to wear around town and use as a more traditional jacket/pants combo. The Badlands is a little heavier and the material is a little stiffer, although you don’t notice it when riding.
When asked for advice on protective gear, my standard answer is: Buy the best protective gear you can afford. I can tell you from experience, a good quality cycling kit will last for years and will make your cycling experience much more enjoyable over time.
