Kim Potter found guilty in the shooting of Daunte Wright
Daunte Wright’s legal team, along with his family, are speaking to reporters following the guilty verdict in the trial of former police officer Kim Potter.
Potter is guilty first- and second-degree manslaughter in the April 11 shooting of Wright during a stopover arrest on April 11.
Potter, 49, pleaded not guilty. She stood up and testify before a jury, she broke down in tears as she recounted the shooting, eventually apologizing and emphasizing that she “didn’t want to hurt anyone.” In her emotional testimony, Potter said she remembers “screaming ‘Taser, Taser, Taser,’ and nothing happened, and then he told me I shot him.”
The maximum penalty for first degree manslaughter charged with reckless use/handling of a firearm is 15 years in prison and/or a $30,000 fine. However, because Potter has no criminal history, Minnesota sentencing guide proposed a prison sentence of 6 to 8.5 years.
Her sentencing date has been set for February 18, 2022.
