Kevin Sinfield: Leeds Rhinos legend completes 24 hour 101-mile run MND

Hot news

Rugby legend Kevin Sinfield completed a 101-mile run in 24 hours to support motor neuron disease research and raised more than £600,000.

He departs on Monday from Welford Road, where he is the Leicester Tigers manager.

The route ended at Headingley, home of the Leeds Rhinos rugby club, where he played for 18 years.

Sinfield raised £2.7m last year by running seven marathons in seven days and was a teammate of Rob Burrow, who was diagnosed with MND in 2019.

Sinfield told the BBC Breakfast after finishing in Headingley: “It was a real team effort and I wouldn’t have been able to get the job done without them.

“The support along the route has been incredible from the start. It’s definitely been a battle – we want a battle and we definitely have a battle.

“I’m broken – I don’t know when I’ll be able to run again.

“Rob knows how much we love and care for him.”

The 41-year-old initially set a fundraising goal of £100,000 for the Extra Mile Challenge, but he exceeded that total before starting the run at 08:40 GMT on Monday.

By the end of the challenge, the total amount raised had skyrocketed to over half a million pounds.

His grueling road from the East Midlands to West Yorkshire is divided into seven-kilometre segments, with each segment having to be completed within 60 minutes.

Than to follow.
