Keith Thurman On Spence-Crawford: “This Is What Our Generation Needs”

Keith Thurman doesn’t know how to keep his opinions to himself. Furthermore, although Thurman doesn’t fight as much as he should, he is a boxer inside and out. When the boxer known for “Once” talks about sweet science, there’s often a very good reason to listen. It’s therefore interesting to hear Thurman weigh in on the upcoming July Errol Spence-Terence Crawford superfight. After all, Thurman was supposed to be one of the two men’s future rivals. However, it’s clear that the Florida-born boxer respects the fact that the long-awaited welterweight title fight is on.

“Here are two undefeated champions,” Thurman told fightHub. “Two champions of this caliber, undefeated, will unite the entire division, doing something unprecedented, something that Floyd Mayweather has never achieved in his career. Sure, as great as he is, Mayweather has never held the title of undisputed world welterweight champion. Indeed, there has never been an undisputed welterweight champion in the era of the big four (WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO). Yet another reason why Spence-Thurman is seen as a big deal.

“This is what our generation needs, they need it to achieve status. “Both are future Hall of Famers, but someone will have a few more words to say on their placard at the end of the day, which is what combat is all about,” Thurman said. Sure, Crawford and Spence are likely to be inducted into the Hall of Fame no matter what happens during their July battle. However, as Thurman pointed out, fights like these are necessary for the health of the sport. And indeed, Thurman himself would certainly enjoy participating in an event of this magnitude. Not that the man didn’t get into some of the big fights of his own.

Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero are just a few of the names Thurman has conquered in the ring. Indeed, the man has only lost once, which was against living legend Manny Pacquiao in 2019 (and that bout was pretty close). However, Thurman doesn’t seem crazy in the face of Spence as the young man is on the rise. Furthermore, a fight between him and Crawford never took place. If he starts fighting more (Thurman hasn’t been in the ring in over a year), that man could find himself eventually sharing the ring with Spence or Crawford in the near future.
