WASHINGTON – Justice Clarence Thomas defended himself Friday against allegations that he received lavish gifts and travel from a wealthy conservative donor without disclosing pertinent information.
In a statement released by the Supreme Court, justice said he had followed instructions from others at the court and that he believed he was not required to report the trips.
“Early in my tenure in court, I sought guidance from my colleagues and others in the judiciary, and was advised that this kind of personal hospitality from close friends who no business before the court, is unreportable,” Justice Thomas said. “I have tried to follow that advice throughout my tenure and have always sought to adhere to the principles of disclosure.”
The statement of justice comes later ProPublica revealed that he traveled by private jet and yacht at the invitation of real estate billionaire Harlan Crow. The vacations spanned nearly two decades, including trips to Indonesia and Bohemian Grove, an exclusive retreat nestled in the redwoods of Northern California.
Last month, the American Judiciary Conference, the policymaking body for the federal courts, approved stricter rules requires judges to disclose private jet travel and stay in commercial establishments such as resorts.
In his statement, Judge Thomas said he would comply with the new guidelines.
The holiday contrasts with justice’s public portrayal of him as a man of the people.
“I prefer RV parks. I prefer the Walmart parking lot to the beach and the like. There is something normal to me about that,” Judge Thomas speaking in a documentary about his life. “I come from a regular source, and I like that better – I prefer being around.”
