Junkyard Gem: Custom 1992 Ford Crown Victoria LX

Ford began selling the Ford Crown Victoria in 1992 and its incredible model two decades of sales success with law enforcement agencies And taxi companies tends to overshadow its popularity as a civilian vehicle. Naturally, many Crown Vics have been customized, with highlights including tank engine swap, Interceptor police low-altitude vehicle and so on, and today Scrapyard Gems This is an early model that I found at a garage sale in North Carolina a few months ago.

Ford began using the Crown Victoria name in the mid-1950s (no doubt inspired by coronation 1953 of Queen Elizabeth II), as a trim level designation for the upscale Fairlane. It was revived in LTD Crown Victoria during 1980-1991, and only became a separate model name in 1992.

Enthusiasts often identify these cars by the numbers in the fifth through seventh digits of the VIN. Extended-wheelbase taxi models are P70, Police Interceptors are P71, regular taxis are P72, base sedans are P73, and premium LX sedans are P74 (for 2010 and 2011, the last digits in these sequences were replaced with A, B, C, D, and E). This car is a P74.

Every Crown Victoria produced from 1992 to 2012 was powered by a 4.6-liter SOHC Modular V8, rated at 190 horsepower and 260 pound-feet (single exhaust) or 210 horsepower and 270 pound-feet (dual exhaust). The 1992 Police Interceptors weren’t any more powerful than their civilian counterparts, but they had more robust cooling systems, balanced aluminum driveshafts, and an ECU that wouldn’t go into limp mode during high-speed pursuits.

This is the top-of-the-line LX Touring sedan, with a leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel.

The car’s MSRP is $23,892, or about $54,417 in 2024. That’s quite a bit more than its $20,644 price tag. Grand Marquis Mercury Same LS but cheaper base 1992 version costs $31,211 Lincoln Town Car. The base 1992 Crown Victoria P74 started at $19,563 ($44,557 after inflation).

The paint still looks pretty good, considering where this car is now, but the lack of door handle shave so disappointing

Luckily, I found another P74 that had been treated the same way at another Charlotte lot that same day.

The Interceptor police car ad is much more interesting.
