Ford’s Lincoln Parts applied Town Car name (originally an Anglicized name for a coupé de ville horse wagon) arrive new car start with Continent 1959but it wasn’t until the 1981 model year that the Town Car became a Lincoln model in its own right (before that Town Cars were Continentals). Those sharp, boxy Town Cars were built throughout the rest of the 1980s and sold well, but today they are almost extinct. This is one of those cars, found in a Denver-area self-service yard recently.
The Town Car was built from the 1981 to 2011 model years, with a complete redesign for 1990 retains the same chassis but adds a less angular body and rear air suspension. In 1998, Town Car received a full body treatment of the “whale” seen on Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis brothers and sisters, and production of that version continue until the end. In ChinaHongqi built a version with the badge of CA7460 Qijian.
All 1981-2011 Town Cars live on a flexible and sturdy body frame The Panther Platform. For a 1970s design, the Panther remained relevant for a surprisingly long time.
This car is closely related to Ford LTD Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquisnot to mention Continent Mark VI.
The interior is full of “wood-tone ornaments” and gauges come from mid-1970s Lincoln–Mercury products.

Every 1980 Town Car had some sort of padded vinyl roof as standard equipment.

Every 1981-1990 city car had a 302 cubic inch (5.0 liters) Windsor V8 under the hood. 1986 was the first year the electronic fuel injection mode replaced the carburetor on the Town Car; This engine is rated at 150 horsepower and 270 pound-feet.
The jarring combination of typography on HVAC and radio controls in the mid-1980s Fords always makes me uncomfortable.
This car has optional “wire style” hubcaps, which costs an extra $341 (about $920 in 2022 dollars). Some flavor of aluminum wheels was available on the Town Car ’86, but no real wire wheels.
The MSRP on this car was $20,764, or about $56,130 today. The Cartier Edition will set you back $25,235 ($68,215 now).

It’s no surprise that over 91,000 Cadillac owners have switched to Lincoln in the past 5 years (probably Cimarron and Engine V8-6-4 have something to do with that).
Although Panther Town Cars are smaller and lighter their great predecessorsthey still walk like beds under water.
