Jonathan Rea beat Bautista for P1 on opening day at Phillip Island
Superbike FIM World Championship 2022
Round 12 – Phillip Island
WorldSBK . sixth practice report
When the pit lane opened for the second and final practice session for the World Superbike competitors on Friday afternoon, the temperature was just under 20 degrees at Phillip Island, with 70% humidity and road temp. race is 42 degrees.
Jonathan Rea overtook Alvaro Bautista for bragging rights on Friday in his final round of the FP2 session to take the Spaniard’s best for P1.
Alex Lowes had a good practice with many quick laps to finish in fourth on Friday ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu and Andrea Locatelli.
A bit of a surprise in P6 was Tetsuta Nagashima, who was standing at Honda in place of the injured Iker Lecuona. Nagashima finished Friday fastest ahead of Oettl, Gerloff, Redding and Rinaldi.
Despite excellent conditions, fast time has not come today… In the same weather conditions here last time, February 2020, almost three years ago, Friday’s pace was faster. Sure, the track temperature was cooler that day, but it still looks like the Phillip Island track was pretty green today. The riders are two seconds away from the lap record set by Tom Sykes in 2020 here and not much faster than local local Superbikes. And that’s not comparing apples to apples, the World Superbike is far from the Aussie Superbike, for all intensive purposes, barely in line compared to the World Superbike. Looks like the track doesn’t offer enough grip to utilize their superior horsepower and brakes here today.
World Superbike riders will return to the track in a 30-minute FP3 session on Saturday at 10:50, followed by a Superpole session at 13:10. Race one will begin at 16:00 on Saturday, at the time, the forecast suggested it could get pretty wet here at Phillip Island…
