Jokers, Killing Dissent – While Calling It Debate – Watts Up With That?

From Jennifer Marohasy’s Blog

Back to 2014, when Tony Abbott was Prime Minister of Australia, and after a series of critical articles in The Australian showing how the Bureau of Meteorology had modified the historical temperature series to overstate warming. , had the opportunity to review.

There’s a real chance for an overhaul of how the Bureau not only changes recorded temperatures but also weather forecasts.

The plan was passed to the Cabinet and it was ‘shut down’ by then Environment Secretary Greg Hunt. He is on public records proudly explains that he ‘killed’ the idea.

Greg Hunt wants everyone to know that he stepped in and shut down the idea, and Tony Abbott was never asked to explain how or why he let that happen.

Meanwhile, the journalist who wrote articles promoting calls for a reconsideration of the Bureau was briefly sent to South America, and I lost my adjunct position at Central Queensland University. That was in 2015.

In the eight years since, the Bureau has further exaggerated historical warming trends, and deployed a series of new resistance probes in electronic weather stations that can record even heat levels. even warmer for the same weather.

It is not though this has been without consequences. Bureau hype has provided justification for sweeping economic interventions, so there is no longer an active energy market in Australia. Instead, governments from both political camps have provided hundreds of billions of dollars more in taxpayer dollars, and faster and faster with whatever laws and regulations are needed, to enforce the transition. switch to renewable energy and close coal-fired power plants.

Meanwhile, the Bureau is working towards faster and faster resistive probes that are designed to be thinner and therefore even more responsive to fluctuations in air temperature – and pressure. politics on hot days like never before. Without the inertia of market forces, or mercury thermometers, which would take a minute or two to adjust to changes in air temperature depending on wind speed, the probes could record temperature higher days in the same weather.

This allows the Bureau to continue calling new record hot days and declaring them a consequence of human-caused global warming. For example, the Bureau claimed the hottest September record ever on 22 September 2017 for Mildura, then extended this to the whole of Victoria, claiming the hottest record since 1889, due to carbon emissions, without explanation that you can get the same effect from more sensitive devices. The temperature in 1889 was measured with a mercury thermometer, not a resistance probe.

It was calling that new record for Mildura that led me to complain to John Abbot, a scientist and lawyer, about the need for parallel data. These are temperature measurements taken by mercury thermometers at the same time and place as measurements from resistance probes, thus potentially providing the Bureau’s ability to check overshoots.

It took more than three years, and an Administrative Appeals Court appearance, before John Abbot was able to extract even small amounts of parallel data from the Bureau for a Brisbane Airport site under Freedom of Information law. believe.

After I analyzed three years of data provided as over 1,000 scanned reports and showed that measurements from the probe and mercury at Brisbane airport were different, with the probe sometimes recording temperature 0.7C higher than mercury and this difference is statistically significant, and after Graham Lloyd wrote the story in The Weekend Australian on Saturday 15 April, I was invited to join the program of Chris Kenny on Sky TV.

That’s not the main story, on Monday, April 17.

Chris Kenny introduced the topic of catastrophic human-caused global warming as ‘a debate’. He then went on to introduce me as a biologist in a ‘debate’ with the Bureau of Meteorology about measurements from the new instrument that magnified current temperatures. Except the office won’t argue with me, they’re ignoring me – to the extent possible, at least publicly.

Chris Kenny, however, introduced such a subject, and only after a long passage in which he lamented that the Princess of Wales Catherine was said to have been denied entry to the Queen’s bed before her death, for fear it would offend the Duchess of Sussex Meghan.

I think it’s old news. And certainly, there are no economic consequences – while our entire economy is being restructured at great expense to prevent global warming as measurements show it is getting hotter and hotter. Meanwhile, the two royal commentators he had in front of me, discussed Meghan, where it was allowed to go on and on, and they were allowed to engage in some ‘debate’, namely about family politics and what kind of person Meghan has become. disruptive influence.

Of course, if Chris Kenny can have two conservative commentators on the segment before I argue about Meghan, then at least in theory he can find a conservative commentator to argue with me on the subject of resistance exploration and the Bureau’s warming. Not to mention how this provides a reason for the government to fund more corporations that make a lot of money from renewable energy at the expense of taxpayers.

Except Chris Kenny doesn’t, and he won’t let anyone argue about me or the subject. It’s not the details of the subject of how temperature is measured, or the history of the Conservative Party, beginning with Margaret Thatcher, that makes it confusing. The Conservative Party media just sees the issue as someone else’s fault, and they elevate others to the position of reverence as soon as they switch sides, be it Patrick Moore or Michael Shellenberger.

As Tucker Carson has explained since he was removed from his position as the most popular host of Fox News, for going into detail on an uncommon issue – even aired footage of QAnon Shaman peacefully escorted by Capitol police on January 6
– if you want a job in the mainstream media, you need to self-censor.

And if you want a job in politics and you can’t censor yourself, then get someone like Greg Hunt to do it for your entire team, the entire Cabinet – for you, Scotty and also Peter Dutton.

I have observed that over the past decade, the Conservatives have demonstrated more group thinking than the Greens and Labor combined on this and most other issues, and have stated that they welcome debate. If only the Australian Broadcasting Corporation allowed it. Never mind that they have been the government for most of the last decade.

As Timothy Crouse wrote in his famous analysis of traditional journalism:

“In a world of candid and objective journalism, the more freedom a reporter has, the more he censors himself. Freedom drives a reporter crazy, because it’s not really freedom at all.

Freedom simply means that no one clearly marks all the pitfalls and pitfalls, so the reporter becomes as cautious as a blind man on the battlefield. [ends]

And so Chris Kenny devalued my segment, which potentially provides the ammunition the Conservatives need to argue Net Zero, by placing it late in the evening and after stories Interesting trivia involving the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

I was reading former Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex’s memoir, Spare’s memoir, at the end he lamented the royal’s relationship with the British media. He goes into some detail about how both Charles and the late Queen had/had PR teams constantly negotiating with the media. He explains why what is reported is less about the news but about what both sides define as convenient and acceptable within their own weird rules of the game. this, at any time. No wonder there has never been any proper ‘debate’ about human-caused global warming in the UK, with the former Prince, now King Charles III, known to consider the issue This topic is his pet project that the media will respect their rules of participation.

I am very grateful to Chris Kenny for letting me join his final show on Monday 17 April following Graham Lloyd’s front page article on The Weekend Australia, except there was no argument, and no there is debate. It is the most destructive and the worst of all lies.

Furthermore, most Conservatives always repeat the Bureau’s statements about impending disaster. There’s Tim Wilson, a former Goldstein member and former IPA employee, and a great supporter of the official line on all this. Then there is former deputy prime minister Josh Frydenberg. He got it right with the Bureau forging historical records and may have at least tried to do something about it when he was a former Environment Secretary. Why didn’t Chris Kenny, or one of the other Sky News commentators, start some debate by letting one of the champions of this catastrophic warming, and thus perhaps reintroduce The Bureau’s pseudo-historical temperature generator is also on his debate agenda?

Then, of course, there’s Greg Hunt. Back in 2014, he apparently ‘killed’ Tony Abbott’s attempt to advance an investigation into the industrial-scale remodeling of Australia’s temperature history through homogenization. the background to the story provides us with more and more expensive electricity, while becoming less and less reliable.

Most Conservative politicians in Australia know that there are major problems with the Bureau’s characterization of our temperature history, and possibly even the new record-breaking heat days that the Bureau repeatedly calls for. so-called consequences of custom-designed resistive probes rather than global warming. But they pretend otherwise and look in a different direction.

No one really wants debate – on both sides of Australian politics.
