Jaecoo J6 previewed in Malaysia – interesting Land Rover Defender look-alike electric vehicle with up to 279 PS, 501 km range
Jaecoo has been building momentum in Malaysia with a steady trickle of supply teaser And information about its upcoming new products J7. But Chery’s luxury off-road vehicle brand is looking to the future by previewing a number of upcoming models at the Malaysia Motor Show, including this one – an all-electric model. J6.
First seen in China last year as the iCar 03 (iCar is another Chery sub-brand), it is a compact electric SUV that is slightly shorter in length than the Chery. Toyota Corolla Cross. It is just 4,406 mm long but 1,910 mm wide and 1,715 mm tall, while its wheelbase is 2,715 mm long.
The tall and wide stance gives the J6 an almost 4×4 look that’s not too dissimilar from the J6. Land Rover defender. The visual connection to the rear is enhanced by the boxy design, the massive wheel arch extensions, the vertical wraparound greenhouse, the black roof and even the side-opening rear doors.
Adding a bit of interest to the styling are the daytime running lights and stone-trimmed “i” taillights (reminiscent of the iCar brand), the former joining the slim headlight bar/grille. As promised, the local cars will have an illuminated front “i” badge and a sizable 40-liter rear storage “backpack.”
One promise Jaecoo didn’t keep was that a show car had right-hand drive, the unit seen here remains left-hand drive. Even so, we’re getting a very clear look at what the J6’s interior will look like, with the Land Rover ethos continuing with the stock black-and-white color scheme, large grab handle on the center console and door cards, in bulk. Silver metal trim and even exposed Allen bolt heads.
As befits a Chinese car these days, there’s plenty of tech, including a 9.2-inch digital gauge display and a massive 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen running on top Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor. You also get a 50-watt Qi wireless charger, a panoramic glass roof, and an optional 12-speaker Infinity sound system.
Jaecoo has taken another book from the Land Rover playbook by giving the J6 an all-aluminium structure, but has beaten the famous British brand to the punch with an all-electric powertrain. Two versions of the iCar 03 are currently available in China, one with a rear engine that produces 184 PS (135 kW) and 220 Nm of torque, the other with an additional front engine for generating total system output of 279 PS (205 kW) and 385Nm.
There are also three lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery sizes available, including a 50.63 kWh model (offered on RWD models only) with a range of 401 km, a 63.69 kWh version with a range 501 km (RWD) or 472 km. (AWD) and an AWD-specific 69.77 kWh battery with a range of 501 km. Of course, all figures are based on China’s lenient CLTC cycle.
Unfortunately, charging speeds are modest, with DC fast charging limited to 60, 80 or 85 kW depending on battery size, all of which deliver between 30 and 80% charge in 30 minutes. . You also only get a maximum of 6.6 kW of AC charging power. Given Jaecoo’s premium positioning here, we expect to get the highest specs available and the widest range.
The J6 will arrive in Malaysia some time after the J7, which will be launched here soon (the car is said to go on sale in October this year). Half a year, and there’s just over a month left).
