‘It’s not as easy to make 168’

One of the most talked-about factors leading into the Canelo Alvarez-Jermell Charlo pay-per-view fight on Sept. 30 is size.

Alvarez is the undisputed 168-pound champion and Charlo is the same at 154, meaning the latter will be moving up two weight divisions to face a future first-ballot Hall of Famer.

Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) probably won’t approach the division limit at the weigh-in but he will have gained around 10 pounds, which he told BoxingScene.com is a challenge.

He was asked whether he might stay at 168 if he’s successful against Alvarez at T-Mobile Arena.

“Man, I really don’t know that just yet,” he told the outlet. “168 is considerably still kind of like not my weight division. It’s not as easy to make 168. I have to gain weight and gaining weight when you’re working really hard is really tough.

“… I’m definitely not the naturally bigger fighter. 168 is not my weight division.”

That’s what made Charlo’s decision to fight Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) so bold. He hopes he’ll inspire his counterparts to make similar moves.

“Sometimes to make the best fights in boxing you have to take chances and risks,” he said. “That’s just the nature of this game. We want to continue to put on for the sport, because fights like this make the sport of boxing very noticeable and top notch.

“We have to continue doing these things.”
