According to the Mayweather Promotions website, “Since signing with Mayweather Promotions in 2015, (The Tank) Davis has demonstrated nothing but hard work and determination as well as confidence in himself.” Honestly, the proof is in the pudding. Twenty-eight wins. Scatheless. Twenty-four of them won in the distance. Throw in a few world titles and it’s no wonder Davis is impressive in the ring. At least he certainly has so far. However, Davis is now making it clear that he is leaving Mayweather Promotions after defending his WBA pay-per-view lightweight belt this weekend against Rolando Romero in Brooklyn.

“I felt like it was my career,” Davis told Brian Custer, “so I felt like I needed to be the one in control of my career. And the time has come. “Pretty fair, but did the popular gladiator make the right decision? His mentor and Mayweather Promotions honcho Floyd Mayweather certainly went his separate ways as he fought, thus establishing himself as a breakout earner in the sport of boxing. Perhaps Davis felt lightning would strike twice. The Exciting news now reports that Davis will bring the biggest boxing gate in Barclay’s Center history this weekend, so it’s easy to see how the Baltimore native will come to that conclusion.

Add to that nasty accusations that Davis and/or his team have been careful to avoid competition at the highest level, like Vasyl Lomachenko, Devin Haney, George Kambosos or Teofimo Lopez. Mayweather has faced similar criticism of his peers throughout his career. And, true or not, such accusations tend not to fade easily. Perhaps Davis felt it would be easier without Mayweather Promotions to take him down against a competitor of his caliber. Or perhaps Davis simply doesn’t get along with his ad team anymore. The truth is that no one really knows what is going on behind closed doors.

In the end, however, the 27-year-old star deserves credit for being ready to forge her own path in life. The man known as “The Tank” told Custer: “People don’t have to let them practice forever. “It’s time to ride your own bike without exercise wheels.” After this weekend, the world will see how well Davis drives on his own. The road may be bumpy, but the man seems sure of himself. Here’s hoping the journey is a smooth one.
