Gomez Bests Cota Through Unanimous Decision
By: Sean Crose
5-0 middleweight Yoelvis Gomez takes on Jorge Cota 30-5 in a 10th round match scheduled for Saturday as part of Showtime’s Benavidez-Lemieux match being televised. Gomez last fought on Christmas Eve 2021, when he stopped Clay Collard in the first round. Cota’s most recent game saw him stop him in the fourth round last May by Sebastian Fondura.
Gomez started unloading from the very beginning. Gomez continued to score in the second half, but he was too eager and tried to score quickly to equalize. A thunderous shot in the third round jolted Cota, who was then flung onto the mat. Cota got up and tried just to survive the round, which he did. Cota then accidentally tagged the referee to the bell. Cota went on to have a better fourth game. Then he went on to have a good fifth.
The sixth goal was a strange situation, as it seemed to Gomez this morning that he might indeed not have scored in stoppage time. Gomez wobbled his man early in the seventh inning, but Cota kept his ground. In fact, he’s still competitive. Gomez continued to thrash Cota in the 1/8 round. Cota played in game nine, but he wasn’t enough to win. Gomez rocked Cota again in the tenth round. And again, Cota continued to fail to land… but clearly the fight was on Gomez.
The referees agreed, rewarding Gomez with a unanimous winning decision.
