Is black and white the solution to bad light in landscape photography?
One of the most frustrating things about landscape photography is that you have no control over the light and an otherwise perfect scene could be ruined by it. However, just because the lighting isn’t pretty doesn’t mean you need to pack up and head home; sometimes, the answer is to tweak your approach a bit. Black and white can be one such solution, and this great video shows how it can help you return home with picture-worthy photos.
Coming to you from Christian Irmler – Landscape photography, this excellent video explores the use of black and white in landscape photography when lighting is not ideal. Of course, this does not mean that you can just turn a mediocre photo into black and white and get a worthwhile result in the end. The thing to remember, however, is that black and white emphasize the pure tones of an image, and while hard light can spoil a color photo, its sharp edges and hard contrast can become extreme. Interesting wonders in black and white. Check out the video above for a full rundown from Irmler.
