A reimagined Hollywood icon

The Wearstler projects have always had a flashy atmosphere, but the newest destination has arrived with built-in charm. The development involved the careful restoration of a historic landmark with Old Hollywood roots: the 1920s era renaissance renaissance building by the iconic LA architects Curlett & Beelman. Originally a stylish private club frequented by Cecil B. DeMille and Harry Warner during its heyday, the stately 13-story structure served as a YMCA in the ’60s — two blocks Novelty rooms take advantage of a classic basketball court and indoor swimming pool.

Led by the award-winning development team, KOR Group, the adaptive reuse project took three years to complete and leaves Wearstler with an incredible canvas to bring the 1920s icon back to vibrant life.

A proper look

With vestiges of Curlett & Beeman’s work as its base, Wearstler blended the ideals of Mexican modernism (an art movement first flourished in the 1920s) with Portuguese, Spanish and Moroccan design elements as a fusion of the multicultural roots of the South Park neighborhood. The result is an immersive warm and colorful world that captivates the heart.

As mentioned above, local collaboration is a key component for all Match hotels, including during the design process. Wearstler invited a team of LA artists for murals and custom installations—Abel Macias Glass artist paints a mélange of Mexican folk art animals in the foyer Judson Studios created a striking stained glass structure that directs guests to the lobby level Caldo Verde restaurant and ceramic murals Ben Medansky and Morgan Peck stood out for the size in the proper pool suite and front desk.

Drink and Eat

Destination restaurants are an important part of the Matching Agreement. For downtown Los Angeles, the hotel group tasked James Beard Foundation Award winners and partners Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne with a dual restaurant and lounge.

The signature landmark of downtown Los Angeles is the Caldo Verde, a spacious lobby space serving Portuguese and Spanish-influenced breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Expect dishes like chorizo and eggs with soft buns, hearty salads, grilled ribs with Alentejo butter and the restaurant’s eponymous dish: Portuguese soup made with local rock crab, kale and grilled linguica.
