Indian government plans to announce standard USB Type-C charging rules for smartphones, tablets and laptops: Details


India is planning to introduce a European Union-like regulation that would urge technology device companies to include standard charging ports for smartphones, tablets and laptops. Currently, the decision is being discussed and awaiting official announcement. However, standard charging rules for electronic devices are expected to be followed from 2025. Standard charging rules will be announced in India

According to LiveMint report, the Union IT Ministry is expected to announce the Standard Charging Rules for several electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and Laptops in the coming weeks. As of now, it has been revealed that the government will require companies to integrate USB-C or Type-C charging ports from June 2025. Quoting a source, “Universal phones Smartphones or basic phones, hearing devices and wearables will remain the same. temporarily out.”

Apart from smartphones and tablets, Laptops will also follow the same rule, however, it will be applicable by the end of 2026. The government will give companies some real time to integrate changes. The move is said to help combat e-waste caused by multiple charging ports and will encourage users to take advantage of single cable solutions for various devices.

The EU also announced unified charging ports for several hardware devices such as smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones, video game consoles and speakers. Now, India is planning to make similar changes and standardize charging ports in the country. Consumer Affairs Minister Rohit Kumar Singh said: “During the meeting, there was a broad consensus among stakeholders to use USB Type-C as a charging port for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops”. Note that official confirmation is still awaited from MeitY.
