Importance of data for clinical decision making

“If we are to be honest about changing the patient experience, we must ensure that we collect data and make clinical decisions as close to data collection as possible,” AJ Missaghi, Director of Healthcare Technology and Life Sciences at Dell Technologies.

During his session, “The Healthcare Industry Revolution”, sponsored by Dell Technologies, Missaghi argues that it’s important for healthcare leaders to use insights from data to deliver the best level of effectiveness. New results for patient care.

An example is The Digital LifeCare program, launched in partnership between Dell, the government of India and Tata Trusts in 2018. Using a digital platform with mobile apps, cloud and analytics, activists Accredited Society (ASHA) and Auxiliary Midwives (ANMs) monitor the health of more than 135 million people in districts across India.

Missaghi explains: ASHA goes to remote areas and starts collecting data from communities that don’t normally have that kind of interaction.

Another example is Dell’s work with genomics in the US, helping researchers make faster decisions with the data they’re collecting in the lab.

“You need access to high-performance computing – that’s what we offer. We have specialized solutions that let you do it a lot faster,” says Missaghi.

DataOps

The data collected in real time is known as ‘streaming data’, which is valuable for both short and long term decision making.

“Over time, the value of that data will start to increase because you can start to build long-term profiles of that data and include in different studies, bed management, process optimization or whatever you like.” “You can make decisions that affect not only the patient, but also the clinician, and quickly iterate and optimize the process or change the classification process. If only genomic data were to be accessed, , you can make decisions about that process much faster. We call this DataOps.”

DataOps is a set of practices, processes, and technologies focused on improving communication, integrating, and automating data flows between data managers and data consumers within an organization.

Major labs and pharmaceuticals have leveraged DataOps to support rapid vaccine creation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Missaghi continued: “It is enabled because the data is collected and streamed globally into a database. “People all over the world are analyzing it, working on it and testing it and ultimately quickly rolling back the vaccinations we’ve seen.”

Finally, Missaghi invites audiences to consider the type of data their clinical processes are generating and how it is being used.

Missaghi concludes: “If you don’t make decisions fast enough, I can assure you that it has an impact on your patient experience and even on your clinician’s experience.” “If you have any data points that can be manual at this point, digitize.”
