‘I can’t believe it!!’: Dick Vitale calls Dayton’s buzzer smasher the sadness of number 4 Kansas
Dick Vitale’s return to the airwaves on Tuesday while battling lymphoma made waves, and the ESPN college basketball analyst of more than 40 years received a standing ovation when he called the match between No.1 Gonzaga and No.2 UCLA.
The Bulldogs won easily, beating UCLA by 20, but for fans of the sport, just hearing Vitale on the mic was enough.

On Friday, Vitale got into action again to call the Dayton vs 4 Kansas game. This time around, Vitale has an exciting match that is well-deserved and matched by his particular passion and excitement for the sport.
The Jayhawks took an early lead and led to 15 before Dayton bounced back to win at the buzzer to relieve discomfort. But it was Vitale’s call that upset the Flyers because it was much more special and considered good punctuation to an already tumultuous college basketball season.
Dayton guard Malachi Smith drove to the basket and made a shot with five seconds left, but was blocked. Dayton’s Mustapha Amzil grabbed the attacking board and delivered an unbalanced shot to the whistle that blared around the rim before falling and delivering the Flyers victory.
It was Amzil’s only goal in 15 minutes of work.

The win was also a history for the Flyers, who went 3-3 of the season and made Kansas lose its first game.
Dayton is only the 2nd team in the past 10 seasons to score 15 points or less and beat AP’s Top-5 team in the group, along with Stephen F. Austin at (1) Duke in 2019.
