Hyundai celebrates heritage with redesigned Giugario concept

hyundai teamed up with Giorgetto Giugario again to recreate his 50-year-old concept that helped shape the Korean brand’s early designs.

The company disclosed the Pony Coupe concept recreated at the stunning Lake Como in Italy, nearly 50 years after its debut at the 1974 Turin auto show. Hyundai collaborated with GFG Style, a design agency run by Giorgetto and his son Fabrizio.

The wedge-shaped concept features a sharp, origami-like styling with unadorned surfaces, while the interior features a minimalist dashboard, bucket seats and a one-spoke steering wheel.

Sharing about his work on the original concept, Giorgetto said: “Hyundai approached us to start a complete redesign of a model without much experience. I was skeptical at first because I didn’t know Hyundai Motor at the time.”

“We were all impressed by the passion and commitment of Hyundai engineers. They are sharp, curious, open-minded and extremely inquisitive,” he added.

“They immediately applied new working methods to them. They sacrifice themselves to make a good impression – for the company and their partners.

“I am proud and honored to have witnessed how this company has grown since we first met.”

The original Pony Coupe Concept was not only a prelude to the first generation Pony, the forerunner of the later Excel and the first car developed by the brand, it also served as the inspiration for the ionq 5 and recently Vision N 74 idea.

It never made it to showrooms, with adverse global economic conditions in the late 1970s costing planned production.

It wasn’t until 1990 that Hyundai introduced a coupe, with the front-wheel-drive Scoupe derived from Excel.

The rear-wheel drive concept measures just 4080mm long, 1560mm wide and 1210mm tall on a 2340mm wheelbase, or 40mm longer than the previous version. Location.

Under the bonnet is a 1.2-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 60 horsepower.

The restoration concept was revealed as part of the inaugural event for the Hyundai Reunion, “a heritage brand platform that reflects Hyundai Motor’s past and its future direction”.

“In the future, through the Hyundai Reunion and other heritage media initiatives, we will continue to leverage our past as a single vector for our future innovation.” Jaehoon Chang, Chairman and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company said.

Recently, Hyundai has been tapping into more and more of its legacy, even as it rolls out electric vehicles. Indeed, it has truly merged the two efforts, revealing electrically revised versions of the first-generation Pony and Grandeur.

Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chairman Euisun said, “Despite the poor industrial environment in the 1970s, my grandfather and founding chairman of Hyundai Ju-young Chung devoted himself to building rebuild the Korean economy and improve people’s lives after the brutal Korean War. Shared.

“I express my sincere gratitude to everyone from both Italy and Korea who have played a key role in the success of Pony.”
