How to see the Oscar nominations 2022

The year 2021 is a Weird year for movies. Well, not for the movie itself, but for the moviewalking. Studios like Warner Bros. tried new hybrid release models, ditched their big movies—Sand dunes, Matrix Recovery—On HBO Max the same day it hits theaters. Streaming services continue to offer more content, like Netflix‘S Don’t look up and The power of the dog. Meanwhile, the audience is just trying to navigate where the content is playing. (Don’t worry, they always find it. Spider-Man: There’s no way homeit’s an exclusive theaterbrought in nearly $260 million domestically in its opening weekend, even when Covid-19 spike cases.)

However, if you’re wondering, how has all of this impacted this year? Oscar race, it did and it didn’t. On the other hand, quite a few nominees—more than a half among this year’s Best Picture nominees — has made its mark on streaming players. But the others-Drive my car, Licorice pizza– purely theatrical.

Either way, you can now stream most of the top contenders already from the comfort of your own home — and you certainly haven’t had time to watch them all yet. Here’s how to catch up before the Oscars airs on March 27.

The power of the dog

Director Jane Campion’s Netflix film topped the list this year with 12 nominations, including a nomination for Best Picture and a nomination for Campion herself. It’s easy to see why. It’s a slow story about toxic masculinity and self-contained lust set against the backdrop of the American West. Also, it’s beautiful.

Sand dunes

Sand duneswhich started running on HBO Max as well as in movie theaters, has received a whopping 10 nominations, including one for costume, aka awesome static suits. Oddly enough, director Denis Villeneuve didn’t get a nod. Dune isn’t currently on WarnerMedia’s streaming service, but it’s available to rent or buy from many others — and will likely return to HBO Max at some point in the future.

Don’t look up

Nightmare Alley

It’s almost a cliché Guillermo del Toro did it again, but with Nightmare Alley, he did. Like his Oscar winner Shape of water, Nightmare Alley—Added from William Lindsay Gresham’s novel that was also made into a film in 1947 — is a blend of all that the director does best: supernatural elements, noir style, use of Ron Perlman. Naturally, it received four nods, including in technical categories like production design and cinematography.

CODA

The acronym CODA stands for “child of a deaf adult,” and the Apple TV+ series of the same name puts such a teenager at the forefront. Ruby (Emilia Jones) is a deaf child in a deaf family who can sing, but will have to be away from home to do so. A sweet coming-of-age story just earned three nominations, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor, for Troy Kotsur – the first for a deaf man.

Macbeth’s Tragedy

The film adaptation of the Shakespeare classic from Joel Coen — an Apple Original Movie — won three nods, including one for the lead role Denzel Washington.

Daughter is gone

Oddly enough, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s debut film, based on the novel by Elena Ferrante, didn’t receive a nomination for Best Picture, but it received a well-deserved nomination for the lead role Olivia Colman and one for Gyllenhaal for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Encanto

OK, so maybe this movie was make TikTok, but that didn’t stop it from receiving three nominations, including one for Best Animated Feature. Disney+ subscribers can watch it there, but it’s also available for rent elsewhere.

Belfast

Writer-director Kenneth Branagh’s black-and-white film, set in tumultuous life in Northern Ireland in the 1960s, topped many of the Oscars’ main categories, including Best Picture, winning seven nominations. nominate. Initially, it was only shown in theaters, but now you can buy it on other services.

King Richard

This biopic about Richard Williams, father of tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams, is also a production provided by HBO Max. Currently nominated for six Academy Awards — including one for Best Actor for Will Smith, who plays Richard — the film is available to rent across multiple services.

Drive my car

Adapted from a short story by Haruki Murakami, Drive my car follows actor and stage director — and recently widowed man — Yusuke Kafuku (played by Hidetoshi Nishijima), as he directs a new production in Hiroshima, and the young woman (Toko Miura) plays The chauffeur role lets him come and go from the series’ many rehearsals. It’s a heartbreaking tale of loss that has earned it four nominations, but unfortunately it’s yet to be streamed anywhere in the United States.

Licorice pizza

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, based on the events of his own youth in Southern California, is also a theatrical release. So, unfortunately, you can’t watch the movie that just received three Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture, anywhere. But based on the release windows, it will likely be available to rent before the Oscars airs.

West story

The Academy gave Steven Spielberg the take on the classic musical with seven impressive nods. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stream anywhere.
