You can make powdered sugar at home with this easy step-by-step tutorial! Also known as confectioner’s sugar, this finely ground white sugar is an important part of many cookies, cookies, and all of your favorite desserts.

Whether you’re busy with last-minute ice recipes, or simply want to experiment with the soothing experience of making this smooth, creamy sugar mix, you’ll be amazed how easy it is. !

Confectioner’s sugar is one of those items that tends to go unnoticed in your pantry. In fact, I’m not the best at gauging how much I actually have in our storage box when I remember flipping through.

It might not be something you use often, but it’s a staple here. We use it for many of my favorite recipes and for some cookies, macaroons and more!

This is one of those cake tutorials I should have given you years ago – it’s so simple! I can’t believe I didn’t share it until now.

What is confectionery sugar?

Powdered sugar (also called confectioner’s sugar) is an extremely fine, fluffy, and fine version of traditional white granulated sugar.

The sugar of confectionery water helps thicken and sweeten frosting and cream into creamy, fluffy concoctions. It’s a requirement to get the perfect smooth finish you’ve been craving in all your best dessert recipes!

Ingredients and Substitutes

  • Sugar – This tutorial works best with white granulated sugar.
  • Cornstarch – Helps create a smooth, cottony texture. It also helps keep the sugar dry as you blend it into a smoother texture.

Variations

  • Add classic granulated sugar with cane sugar, turbinado sugar, or coconut sugar.

Equipment

You will need a small blender or powerful food processor. You can try a spice grinder, a bullet blender, a Vitamix, or even a food blender.

How to make powdered sugar

  1. Add granulated sugar and cornstarch to your blender or food processor.

  3. Remember to pause every minute or so, running your fingers to see if it feels too gritty, and run a spatula around the edges to remove any lumps and particles.

Advice

  • Remember that the most refined, white sugars will produce the finest powdered sugars.
  • Use one tablespoon of cornstarch for each cup of granulated sugar.
  • If you’re only making enough powdered sugar for a recipe, expect the amount of granulated sugar you start using to double. One cup of granulated sugar = two cups of powdered sugar after mixing.
  • To prevent powdered sugar from hardening, place it in an airtight container or cover the original package to seal.

Yes, but this method is tedious. You only need a mortar and pestle to grind granulated sugar into fine, smooth confectioners’ sugar.

Can you make powdered sugar without cornstarch?

Yes you can! Just follow the instructions without adding extra tablespoons of cornstarch per cup of granulated sugar.

How to store

  • Room temperature – Powdered sugar can be stored in an airtight container in a cool dark place (like your pantry or cupboard) indefinitely. It has a long shelf life!
  • Fridge – Since it lasts so well on the shelf, there’s not much of a reason to put powdered sugar in the fridge. It can also absorb odors and moisture in the refrigerator.
  • Freezer – You can freeze powdered sugar indefinitely (wrap it in an airtight package), but since it has such a large shelf life, it’s not necessary.
