How to control reflections in your photos

Reflection can be one of the hardest things to deal with as a photographer, especially when you’re working with round objects that can reflect light from almost any angle. However, learning to read and control reflections is one of the best exercises to improve your lighting technique, no matter what you shoot. This great video tutorial features an experienced studio photographer who shows you how to manage reflections in your images.

Coming to you from Daniel NortonPhotographer, this helpful video tutorial will show you how to control reflections in your photos. Mirroring is a hugely common problem across a variety of genres, and it’s important to learn how to manage them due to the way humans process images. Normally, the eye will focus on the brightest part of the frame and so if you have a bright spot caused by reflection, it can be a particularly distracting element of the image. As you’ll see, Norton advocates learning to control reflections rather than eliminating them altogether, as we need some reflections to create a realistic image and give the subject a sense of depth. Even if you’re not shooting products, this is a great exercise to improve your lighting. Check out the video above for the full synopsis from Norton.
