How I give away 30,000km of free Tesla Supercharge

Back in 2019, I bought my first Tesla – it was a Performance of Tesla Model 3 – and while I waited for the car to be delivered, I included referral links in my social media reviews and descriptions for anyone else who bought a Tesla.

The referral link allows buyers to claim free 1500 km Supercharge when their vehicle is delivered.

In the end, I wanted people to use the link to get 1500km Supercharge for free, which they did, but that also means I got 1500km.

I am not interested in using Supercharge for free, nor do I want to profit from anyone using my referral code. So instead, I pledge that I will donate money to charity if I personally use any Supercharged miles.

Four years went by quickly and I’ve got about 30,000km of unused Free Supercharge credits that expire at the end of April 2023 – and I sold the Model 3 Performance and bought Model Y to replace.

Technically, there’s no way to ‘donate’ or give Supercharge credits to anyone, so I came up with a plan.

In theory, any car linked to my Tesla account is eligible for Supercharger credits, so after testing the theory with my brother driving the Model 3, I called. on social media and asked if anyone would like to help find out more about the free charge balance I left.

I’ve had a lot of people responding to the social media post, but the problem is that they need to transfer their vehicle ownership to my Tesla account to use the free charge credit.

At this point, many people are not interested in the concept of giving me full control of their car. But, to my surprise, there were some people involved.

So we started the process of transferring the cars to my account. These brave souls then have about two months to use the 30,000 km of free charge as much as they can during that period.

The five people who accepted the offer ended up using about 20,000 km of free charging over a two-month period (about 500 km per week on average).

Unfortunately, the rest of the credits expired a few days ago and are now gone forever. But, it’s good to do a good deed!

If you’re wondering, the reason I didn’t use the Supercharger in my years of ownership is because we have very cheap off-peak charging at home.

Every time we travel, I will also book a hotel or accommodation with charging capability to avoid using the Super Charger.
