How does the 10% Chase Sapphire Preferred reward work – The Points Guy

Editor’s Note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

TPG staff are big fans of Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, happily pay the annual fee every year and list it as one of the card we can’t live without. We love that this card earns bonus points for travel and dining, and allows us to transfer our points to valuable transfer partners.

And in 2021, Chase added some new perks to the card to make it even more valuable. One of these benefits is the 10% anniversary points bonus, which gives cardholders a 10% bonus based on their total spend during the account anniversary year at a rate of 1 point for every $1 spent. . So, for example, if you spend $100,000 on the Sapphire Preferred during your five card membership, you’ll get 10,000 bonus points at the end of the year.

From TPG . value The final bonus is at 2 cents each, earning 10,000 bonus points will be the same as getting $200 in value. The more you spend, the more you earn, and this one perk alone can help offset some (or all) of the card’s $95 annual fee.

Let’s dive into the specifics of this benefit and how you can track your progress towards the Chase Sapphire Preferred 10% anniversary bonus.

About the Chase Sapphire Preferred 10% Anniversary Bonus

Without reading the fine print, this new privilege may sound a bit misleading at first. Here are the details:

10% commemorative bonus points: Each account anniversary year, you’ll earn bonus points equivalent to 10% of your total spend points from purchases made with your credit card during the previous account anniversary year at the rate 1 point for every $1 spent. “Account Anniversary Year” means the year commencing from the date of your account opening until the anniversary of your account opening and every 12 months thereafter.

You should not confuse this with earning back 10% of the points you earn in a given year. Instead, you’re earning 10% more points based solely on how much you spend on your given account anniversary.

You can think of this as simply adding 0.1% to the bonus categories currently available on the Chase Sapphire Preferred. As a reminder, here is the card’s monetization rate:

So in your mind you can add 0.1% to all the coefficients above. In other words, you’re earning 5.1 points per dollar for purchases on Lyft (through March 2025), 3.1 points per dollar for dining out, 2.1 points per dollar when buying other trips — the list goes on.

How to track your progress for a 10% anniversary bonus

If you don’t know your account’s anniversary, go to The ultimate reward portal to find this date as well as your progress towards the 10% bonus.

CHASE.COM

Click on “Reward Activity” and you will find a summary of your spending, points earned, and progress in the “Rewards 10% Boost” section.

My account anniversary just reset, so I haven’t earned a lot of points for my new 10% bonus. That number will increase dramatically as I spend more next year.

Another important thing to note here is that you won’t receive your bonus points until 60-90 days after your anniversary period ends. This could be because Chase wants you to pay the annual fee for the following year before awarding you these bonus points.

Regardless, you don’t need to do anything extra to activate this benefit. Points will automatically accrue and deposit into your account once your anniversary is reset. If you want to track your progress, you can do so in the “reward activity” of the Ultimate Rewards portal. If not, let the points fly in.

bottom line

If you don’t put a huge amount of spend on your card, this 10% bonus reward doesn’t have to be epic. However, it’s another perk that makes the Chase Sapphire Preferred a card worth getting and keeping.
