Whenever we take on something new or make some changes in our lives to bring about improvement, we usually have a goal in mind about where we want to end up. A simple example is weight loss. We can gain weight after a particularly hearty season of silly Christmas and New Year’s and find we’re not really fit to fight, so we decide we want to lose a few pounds. In that case, we have a starting point and an ending point in mind. It can be losing 5, 10 kg or whatever, but it is very easy to measure, because we just need to step on the scale every morning and track our progress. The same goes for runtime and many other things that are objectively measurable. But what about photography? How can we measure if we are improving or not?
That question brings us to this amazing video by Mark Denney, in which he walks us through a very simple test we can all take to see if we’ve grown. how far in my photography journey. What is it? A simple before and after test. Specifically, he said that we should open up to the tweaks we made years ago and consider how we would do things differently now. Specifically, he said that we should pay attention to three important things: review the mistakes we made in our original edits, apply new local adjustments to the edits our own with filters and masks, and make global adjustments and compare the results. It’s a great exercise for measuring how we change our editorial approach as we gain more knowledge and experience. It’s an attractive watch that I appreciate.
