Home fans booed Teofimo Lopez’s defeat after claiming he had won his match against George Kambosos Jr.

Teofimo Lopez has been mocked by boxing fans – some of his own – for his stunning claim that he won a bout against new lightweight world champion George Kambosos Jr.

Lopez, the defending champion, is the cheap favorite to take down the Kambosos, even declaring before the match that he would win by knockout in the first leg.

But Kambosos stunned his opponents and the world with one of the most terrifying bouts against an Australian ever seen on the world stage for a decisive victory (115-111, 115-113, 113-114) on Saturday night in New York.

THAN: Lopez, how much will the Kambosos make for the fight?

The challenger showed his dominance early, knocking out Lopez at the end of the first round with a forehand, before continuing to dominate in the middle rounds.

It was clear that in the ninth round, the Kambosos had the upper hand and let Lopez beat, although the American hit a few hits late in the competition making for an intriguing final round.

In the end, however, the judges and fans both believed that the Kambosos was the well-deserved winner. Lopez was left with an open cut above her right eye and clearly in poorer wear.

Before the decision was made, Kambosos was seen in Lopez’s corner, congratulating his opponent on a great fight and paying his respects to Lopez and his team.

After the judges’ scores were read confirming Kambosos’ victory, the Australians let the crowd know.

“Have I changed a whole week? I’ve changed all my careers? Never… I’m not a king, because you have four kings. I’m an emperor,” Kambosos announced, preparing to spirit with light belt.

“I’m the greatest Australian boxer in history.”

Soon after, a bloodied and beaten Lopez stood across from Kambosos and picked up the microphone to say he was the champion, to the opposition of his local crowd in New York.

“He’s a hell of a boxer, but I won tonight, everyone knows that,” Lopez said against a backdrop of heavy boos from the audience inside the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.

“The referee raised his hand. I won tonight, I don’t care what people say, yo, I won tonight. At the end of the day, I was here, I did it, I want to thank you. God, me I want to thank everyone who came out tonight Look, I’m not a lousy loser, I win my win like I admit it.

“At the end of the day, man, I’m a true champion, I did what I had to, and I went out there and did my best. I don’t care what people say, man, I stay the same when they come, and this is the takeover, man, we don’t stop, we keep moving forward.

“Yo, at the end of the day man, I love you all, I won this war.”

Lopez was asked what reason he felt he deserved to win, and the New York-born player said: “At the end of the night, I scored 11-2. 10-2.”

Kambosos regained the microphone to say that Lopez was stunned after the fight, before silenced him.

“Think of it like a champ. Let’s do it again in Australia in front of 80,000 people,” said the champion.

The reception for Lopez’s outrageous comments was similar to the outcry on Twitter, with fans calling the 24-year-old a painful loser.
