Synthetic fuel producer HIF Global has announced that it has received a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Air Quality Permit, which allows the fuel producer to construct and operate a new e-fuel in Matagorda, Texas in the United States.

“In Texas, we are taking eFuels to the next level of commercial scale, and we are now authorized to build the largest eFuels facility in the world, to produce approximately 200 million gallons per year of transportation fuel and eGasoline, which is equivalent to the decarbonization of more than 400,000 cars on the road today,” said HIF Global CEO Meg Gentle.

Carbon-free gasoline and transport fuel will be produced from approximately 2 million tons of recycled carbon dioxide, combined with about 300,000 tons of green hydrogen separated from water using renewable electricity, to achieve The aforementioned annual volume is 200 million gallons or 750 million liters of petroleum transported by 2027.

Construction of the Matagorda eFuels plant, which will begin in 2024, is estimated to create 4,500 direct jobs, along with more than 100 permanent operations jobs.

HIF Global opens pilot e-fuel plant in Punta Arenas, Chile December last year, made official by automotive partner Porsche. The German manufacturer has started using synthetic fuels in Europe-based one-off racing seriesand broader use would apply to it experience center to help their internal combustion engine cars get closer to being carbon neutral.

Earlier in 2022, Porsche invested US$75 million (RM316.1 million) share in HIF Global to start the production of E-Fuel. Following the pilot production of eFuels from the Chile facility, larger-scale production from the plant will begin in 2024, with production expected to reach 55 million liters that year. This will increase to 550 million liters a year by 2026, Porsche R&D chief Steiner has previously stated.

While Porsche targets 80% of all new car sales to be all-electric, that figure is still 20% with ICE-based powertrains. There are also about 70% of all Porsche 911s once in production since 1963, is still on the way, according to Steiner.
