Hawaiian Airlines’ baggage guide is simple to understand and customer-friendly.
Everyone is entitled to bring one personal item and one hand baggage on each flight, including customers making purchases. Hawaiian Basic Economy Edition, Basic Main Cabin. Hawaiian Airlines’ baggage weight limit before charges are incurred is 50 pounds per bag, excluding active-duty US military members and their dependents on official business trips, in which case the limit weight limit increased to 70 pounds/bag.
Single destination rule

Fees for overweight and oversized baggage
Hawaiian Airlines charges both oversize and oversize fees, so these can add up quickly. Hawaii’s overweight and oversized baggage fees are as follows:
- Overweight fee: Starting at $35 per bag weighing 51 to 70 pounds and $70 per bag weighing 71 to 100 pounds.
- Oversize fee: Starting at $35 per bag from 62 to 80 linear inches, including wheels and handles.
Interestingly, there is no excess fee for baggage up to 70 pounds if you are flying to or from Australia or New Zealand.
Excess baggage fee
The Hawaii Baggage Policy states that all excess baggage will cost:
- Flights to neighboring islands: $50 per bag.
- Other North American flights: $100 per bag.
- International flights: $150 per bag.
Sports equipment
Surfing in Hawaii and Hawaiian Airlines have customer-friendly rules if you want to bring your surfboard, skateboard, wakeboard or kiteboard.
The Hawaii baggage policy will allow you to bring sportswear as checked baggage, but sometimes additional fees will apply. In other cases, such as fishing poles, Hawaii will be free to oversize within a certain size range. How to avoid Hawaiian Airlines baggage fees
Luckily, there are a few ways to avoid paying Hawaiian Airlines baggage fees, even if you want to bring checked baggage on your next flight.
Elite status allowance
Both state levels in Hawaiian Airlines’ HawaiianMiles Program offers checked baggage benefits, although they are more restrictive than many other airlines:
- Pualani Gold members get only one free first and second checked bag on all flights.
- Platinum Pualani members can only check in up to three pieces of baggage for free on all flights.
Unlike many other airlines, elite members cannot extend checked baggage benefits to others traveling with their booking.
Credit
Customers who hold Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard as a primary cardholder receive checked baggage allowance on select flights when using their card to purchase tickets directly from Hawaiian Airlines. Specifically, members can bring two standard sized and weight checked baggage on flights between North America and Hawaii (and between the “Neighboring Islands”) at no additional charge.
However, this benefit is slightly different for Pualani Platinum, Pualani Gold and Premier Club members. Specifically, these Hawaiian loyalists are also main members of Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard may bring one extra piece of checked baggage for free in addition to their status normally provided when flying between North America and Hawaii (and between neighboring Islands).
