Gun violence doesn’t stop at Highland Park

The Highland Park attack on the 4th of July parade was the largest and highest shooting, but not the only, of the weekend.

As of early Monday morning, at least 57 people had been shot in Chicago over the weekend of July 4, nine of them dead, according to NBC Chicago. That figure doesn’t include fees from the Highland Park shooting outside the city.

Ten hours before a gunman opened fire at the 4th of July parade in Highland Park – where the median household income is nearly $150,000 and more than 80 percent of the population is whitewith a large Jewish community – five people were shot around midnight Monday at Parkway Gardens, a housing complex in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood where the median household income is below $30,000 and more 90 percent of the population is black.

Five victims, all men, were taken to a local hospital: 17-year-old shot in the arm, 19-year-old shot in the leg, 24-year-old shot in the knee and thigh, 30-year-old. — an aged man was shot in the back and side, and an unidentified man was shot in the leg, according to the Chicago Police Department. In addition to Highland Park and Chicago, authorities in at least a dozen other cities reported shootings over the weekend, most on Mondays.

In Philadelphia, two police officers were shot near the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Monday night. Both officers were transported to Jefferson University Hospital and are in stable condition, according to hospital communications officials.

In Minneapolis, Minn., eight people were injured, some in critical condition, in a shooting in Boom Island Park on Monday, park police said.

One person was killed and four injured in a shooting in Kenosha, Wis., police said. All the victims were adults.

In Sacramento, California, a 31-year-old man was killed and four people injured when shots were fired as a club closed early Monday morning.

Four people were injured in a shooting in Kansas City, Mo., and six were injured in a shooting in Richmond, Va.

Other shootings over the weekend were reported in Mullins, SC; Tacoma, Wash; Manassas, Va.; Clinton, NC; City of Haltom, Texas; and New York City.
