Gun Song Aims at Monmouth Oaks

R. Lee Lewis’ Song about guns looked set to win the George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) for trainer Mark Hennig. However, one start later, she finished a disappointing last of eight in the Acorn Stakes (G1) on June 7 at Saratoga Race TrackWhether it was a scary rebound effect—running back 21 days after a brilliant performance—or a rough start that could be blamed for her poor showing at Acorn, Gun Song will be on the road to redemption in the $250,000 Monmouth Oaks (G3) on July 27.

Gun Song began his second season as runner-up to Ashland Stakes (G1) winner Leslie’s Rose in a grant competition at Gulfstream Park before dominating in the same conditions up to a mile in her next start. Gunman The mare then finished fourth in the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) with a bad break before putting the pieces together in her 3 1/4-length Black-Eyed Susan.

In theory, this class will be up against seven other contenders, and a win at the Monmouth Oaks could put Gun Song back on track for bigger goals in the fall.

Julien Leparoux is training with Gun Song, the top weight class is 122 pounds.

Kentucky Transporter little Jamie will provide Gun Song with the stiffest competition on Saturday. The Robert Medina-trained mare enters the 1 1/16-mile Monmouth Oaks after losing narrowly to Grade 2 winner Chatalas at the Indiana Oaks (G3) on July 6.
