Great Eight: The list may change significantly at the end of the year

The Boxing Junkie “Great Eight” feature – in which we named boxers #1 in each of the original eight weight classes – hasn’t changed in a while, as the best usually don’t fight with the best.

However, a significant shakeup could come soon.

Seven of the “Eight Generals” will or may face serious threats in the near future, including one who is gaining weight to take on another champion. Have a look:

  • heavyweight champion Tyson’s Rage expected to fight with co-owners Oleksander Usyk for the undisputed championship in early June. It was clearly a real test for “The Gypsy King.”
  • light heavy Dmitri Bivol seems to be in the process of clashing with his countrymen and countrymen, Artur Betterbiev. Another significant risk.
  • Tim Tszyu is a long shot to beat middle class juniors Jermell Charlo but his chances seem better than ever after his spectacular performance beat Tony Harrison.
  • heavyweight Terence Crawford and another champion, Errol Spence Jr., injected a little more life into the possibility that they would meet in the long-awaited showdown. It’s a 50-50 fight.
  • Gervonta Davis is a significant favorite to beat Ryan Garcia on April 22 but Garcia brought a lot of talent into that fight. Don’t rule anything out.
  • featherweight teen Stephen Fulton accepted the challenge of bantamweight king “Great Eight” Naoya Inoue, who will gain weight. However, it was a tough, tough fight for Fulton given Inoue’s ability and punching power.

Achieve goal? It’s likely that the “Great Eight” roster will be at least a little different before the end of this year or possibly early next year, which means big wars are on the way.

Or are they? We just have to keep our fingers crossed for the Fury-Usyk, Bivol-Beterbiev, Charlo-Tszyu and Crawford-Spence battles to really be done.

This is how the “Great Eight” works.

The initial eight weight classes were heavy, light heavy, middle, middle, light, feather, bantam, and flyweight.

Heavy includes cruiser class (and WBC bridgeweight class), light heavy includes super medium class, etc.

This is the current list.

WEIGHT WEIGHT – Tyson Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs): The greatest man in the world is in talks to face the only heavyweight who can argue that he should be No. 1, Oleksandr Usyk. The winner of their potential fight will leave no doubt as to who deserves to be on top.

LIGHT-WEIGHT – Dmitry Bivol (21-0, 11 KOs): No brains. The 175-pound champion was voted the World’s Boxer of the Year by everyone after defeating Canelo Alvarez and then overtaking Gilberto Ramirez. That makes this choice as easy as it gets.

MEDIUM – Jermell Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs): No one in 160 or 154 is as dominant as the junior middleweight champion. He was scheduled to play against Tim Tszyu on January 28 but the match was postponed after Charlo broke his left arm in practice.

WEIGHT – Terence Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs). Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. was unable to reach terms in the fight to determine the best 147-pound person, which is unfortunate. Crawford will continue to be on top until someone knocks him down or he shows obvious signs of decline.

LIGHT-WEIGHT – Gervonta Davis (27-0.25 KOs): Davis’ combination of ability and punch power makes him the best in this top weight class, as he has shown again before Hector Garcia. Ryan Garcia could pose a threat on April 22.

WEIGHT WEIGHT – Stephen Fulton (20-0.8 KO): The talented young featherweight belt holder appears to be on a collision course with powerful pressure boxer Brandon Figueroa, who terrified him in his first fight. their ancestors. Now his biggest challenge: Naoya Inoue.

WEIGHT – Naoya Inoue (22-0, 19 KOs): The Japanese bantamweight boxer just defeated Paul Butler to become the undisputed 118-pound champion, giving him the lead over the heavyweights. 115 pounds Juan Francisco Estrada, Roman Gonzalez and Bam Rodriguez one step.

FLIGHT WEIGHT – Julio Cesar Martinez (18-2, 14 KOs): The 112-pound belt holder fell flat as he rose to a challenge against Roman Gonzalez but got back on his winning streak in December, overtaking Samuel Carmona.
