one year later Grand Seiko introduced complicated and sporty models to its Evolution 9 Collection, the watch maker added the first automatic chronograph to the collection.
New Grand Seiko Tentagraph.
The new model, the Tentagraph, features Grand Seiko’s high-speed (36,000 mph) movement, the Caliber 9SA5, supplemented with two additional barrels and an extremely efficient Dual Pulse Escape. The GMT chronograph available in the Evolution 9 is equipped with Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive technology (Calibre 9R96).
With these technical improvements, Grand Seiko says the Tentagraph will maintain a power reserve in chronograph operation for 72 hours, which the watch maker calls “the longest power reserve in the industry today.”
Grand Seiko tests its Tentagraph movements for twenty days with a strict accuracy target of +5 to -3 seconds per day.
The new 43.2 mm x 15.3 mm titanium case watch retains the eye-catching Evolution 9 textured dial finish, here in blue. The dial’s large indexes and concave sub-dials provide quick readability for the wearer.
Grand Seiko also gently curves the chronograph seconds hand downwards so that the tip is as close to the dial markers as possible, again enhancing legibility.
The chronograph features a running seconds sub-dial at three o’clock, a 30-minute chronograph counter at nine o’clock, and a 12-hour chronograph counter at six o’clock.
Grand Seiko’s exclusive dual-pulse escapement efficiently transfers energy to the free-sprung balance wheel indirectly through the pallet fork and also directly from the escapement wheel, improving the efficiency of the movement.
In addition, Grand Seiko integrates a vertical clutch and a column wheel into the movement, both of which enhance the accuracy and controllability of the chronograph.
On the dial, Grand Seiko puts the Mt. The signature Iwate, named after the nearby mountain, is visible through the windows of Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi.
The bezel of the Tentagraph is made of ceramic.
Grand Seiko will offer the Tentagraph at Grand Seiko Boutiques and select retail partners starting June. Price: $13,700.

New masterpiece
At Watches and Wonders 2023, Grand Seiko also debuted a hand-wound, hand-engraved platinum model in its Grand Seiko Masterpiece Collection.
Its dial includes the familiar Shinshu birch pattern, although here Grand Seiko’s artisans have added a slightly different tone and more metallic texture.
Inside the Grand Seiko fits the Spring Drive Caliber 9R02 (first appeared in 2019). The caliber’s superb 84-hour power reserve is the result of a double-spring barrel, where both main springs are housed parallel in one barrel.
Grand Seiko has placed an 18 karat gold plaque on the lower bridge of the 38.5mm watch engraved with the words “Micro Artist”. However, the owner can customize it. Price: $79,000 (limited edition of 50 pieces).
Finally, Grand Seiko presents the Spring Drive jewelry watch inspired by the Brand’s iconic white lion. The watch’s case and dial sparkle with 5.62 carats of diamonds and 1.25 carats of blue sapphires, all hand-crafted.
The sapphire crystal case back reveals the one-piece bridge of the beautifully finished Caliber 9R01 movement, designed in the image of Mount Fuji. Price: $260,000.
