Volvo and sister company The North Star will partner in the launch of Google’s new HD Maps service — an integrated solution specifically designed for automotive applications that collects real-time data to improve vehicle navigation. New technology will debut in Volvo’s all-electric EX90 and Polestar 3.
HD Maps will integrate sensor data with real-time traffic information to better improve route planning and will communicate with onboard equipment Pilot Supports semi-autonomous kit to provide highly accurate information about the vehicle and its surroundings. Volvo says the new software suite will be available on models equipped with Pilot Assist.
“The addition of Google HD Maps in our future car lineup marks an expansion of our strategy partnering with Google, reflecting our commitment to partnering with technology leaders,” said COO and Deputy CEO Javier Varela. “Implementing Google HD Maps in our upcoming cars will help us provide our drivers with a more enjoyable driving experience and in the future will contribute to recommending safe autonomous driving.”

Volvo’s existing relationship with Google has brought us the Android Automotive operating system (not to be confused with the Android Auto app) now rolling out across the brand’s product line. In fact, the two companies have announced that the latest over-the-air update they will roll out includes Google Assistant updates. It is expected to reach 350,000 customers worldwide.
