GM and EVgo strengthen fast-charging network to ease urban electric vehicle ownership, electric ride-hailing service

Planned EVgo charging network, with cooperation with General Motors, to triple the size of EVgo’s charging network by 2025.

This week, that project has been upgraded, with plans to build 500 more counters from the original goal of 2,750 charging stations. With a total of 3,250 DC fast charging booths at the time, EVgo plans to reach 52 urban markets, compared with 40 previously planned.

Construction may also come a little earlier than expected. EVgo, which claims to be the largest public fast charging network in the US and is offering Tesla connector in some terminals, says it has more than 2,000 sites under construction and engineering.

EVgo is a DC fast-charging network centered around major metro charging locations, much more so than the long-distance attractions offered by VW’s Electrify America or Tesla’s Supercharger networks. EVgo tested reservation as a way to make sure those potentially busy sites are available when people need them. And GM’s push matches that, enabling fast charging options for people who live in multi-unit homes and who don’t have reliable charging options at home or at work.

According to EVgo, the new stations can deliver up to 350 kW, which is good enough to restore range up to 150 miles in 8-12 minutes.

Also this week, EVgo announced an expanded discount program with Uber that will offer taxi drivers up to 30% off what you pay as you travel online.

“Expanding the geographic reach of our partnership with EVgo to more metropolitan areas will be key to helping more customers access faster charging,” said GM Infrastructure Manager. , Rick Spina, said in an EVgo release pointing out GM’s plans to offer electric vehicles at a range of price points.

With 2022 Chevy Bolt EVGM currently has one of the most affordable electric vehicles on the market. The company has suggested that a future successor to the Bolt EV could be built upon Ultium push strategy—Working on a future entry-level EV from GM perhaps could take advantage of that high-powered charging hardware more.
