“It’s exciting that it lasts,” Gervonta Davis told the gathered media after knocking out Ryan Garcia in the stunning and brilliant seventh round. “I enjoy every moment of it.” Surprisingly, Davis made it clear that there was no animosity between him and Garcia, although the two warriors had some bad words before the fight. “It was great,” Davis said of the matter. He may be soft-spoken during a press conference, but Davis is fierce in the ring. Perhaps even more important, however, is that he is also very smart in the ring.
He said of Garcia: “I felt like he was more nervous than I was. “You want to stay calm at all costs and you don’t want to make a bad decision.” It was that maturity that seemed to have helped Davis win over Garcia on Saturday. While Garcia sometimes became too eager, Davis was able to maintain his composure and perform consistently throughout the match. For example, when Garcia turned strong in the second round, Davis simply weathered the storm, picking his shot and placing his men on the mat with dazzling speed, efficiency, and power. Garcia stood up, but he couldn’t learn from his mistake. He was down and out a few innings later.
Of course, Davis once said that Garcia simply doesn’t have the same talent pool as him. And on Saturday, Davis proved it. He used a brilliant strategy, Davis did. Still maneuvering, he prevented Garcia from landing his fearsome left arm. Davis also allows himself to execute his shots efficiently. While some might blame the rehydration clause in the fight contract for Garcia’s disqualification, the hard truth is that the famous Californian boxer simply met a better boxer. Indeed, Davis is good.
And now the whole world knows it.
