GASGAS prepares to hit the road with big models
Overnight, GASGAS removed the red coat for the red versions of the KTM 690 Enduro / Supermoto and Husqvarna 701 Enduro / SM models to put on a new outfit. So besides the colors and stickers, what else distinguishes the GASGAS versions of the bike from the KTM/Husky models we already know?
Well, the top differentiator in most minds will be the price? For reference, Husqvarna’s Enduro 2021 701 model is currently priced at 17,195 USD + ORC and the 2022 701 Supermoto is 17,890 USD, while the KTM 690 Enduro R 2022 and its 690 SMC R sibling are priced at 17,695 USD + ORC. The new GASGAS models are expected to hit Australia’s roads and trails around August this year but where will they be offered for sale relative to their sister brand models, despite already being out. made a request through official channels, we are still not sure exactly…
Both cars use the latest generation 692.7 cc single cylinder engine, EURO 5 standard, capacity of 74 horsepower at 8,000 rpm. In its more recent versions (2017-on), this engine is a gem and is about 1,400 miles away from the big bore LC4s of two decades ago thanks to two counterbalancers and other things. the magic of modern engine management systems. Complete with two spark plugs and wire travel, all this helps give that large 105 mm slug a 12.7:1 compression ratio while retaining friendly manners.
Smooth throughout the rev range and with 73.5 Nm of torque peaking at 6500 rpm, they also love a spin. Only even at idle can any slight trace of the old thumping be felt, but from 2500 rpm they only pull gently.
The 13.5-litre fuel tank integrated into the polyamide subframe helps to keep the center of gravity low while also allowing the airbox to be large enough to accommodate the 50mm Keihin throttle body. This is 8mm larger than KTM’s large-barreled 500 EXC-F enduro weapon. Another important point of difference between these bikes and the competing enduro products from the brand is the 10,000 km long warranty period and two year warranty.
A two-way quick-shifter for the six-speed box is standard on both bikes, along with an Adler slip assist clutch that reduces the force exerted on the Magura hydraulics’ levers while allowing some mechanical slip during deceleration.
The Enduro version uses WP XPLOR suspension with 250 mm of travel while the SM version runs the APEX WP kit with 215 mm of front stroke and 240 mm of rear travel. Ground clearance is 269 mm for the ES and 237 mm for the SM.
Like their KTM/Husky 690/701 brethren, the rear suspension has a link rather than a PDS and the suspension geometry of the enduro and supermoto models differs quite markedly in regards to the trio of clamps and SM models have a much shorter wheelbase.
The SM bikes also predictably run different brakes, the runway warrior uses Brembo four-piston radial brake calipers and 320 mm for the Enduro 300 mm rotor and gripper double piston.
Both run Bosch cornering ABS and multi-mode traction control, both of which can be turned off. I know from experience the latest traction control is good enough to sustain 99% of the off-road ride with plenty of scope left for the slides before traction cuts. The ABS system also has an off-road mode that works well. Riders can also select different engine maps to suit the task at hand.
The enduro model runs the size 90/90-21 front and 140/80-18 rear while the SM runs a combination of 120/70-17 and 160/60-17 on a black 5-inch rear rim, double the width of Rear rims are found on enduro bikes. Of course, the supermoto model also shifts gears much longer than the enduro.
The ES 700’s dry weight is 147.5 kg while the SM’s larger stoppers make it 1 kg heavier.
