G7 Summit: Zelenskyy urges leaders to do more to support war effort as Johnson demands action on Ukrainian grain | World News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to call on G7 leaders to do more to support his country’s fight against Russia.

Mr Zelenskyy will speak to world leaders, including Boris Johnson and Joe Biden, via video link from Kyiv after he called on allies to be “non-observing partners” in his nightly address on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Mr Johnson will use Monday’s meeting in Germany to call for urgent action to help get grain supplies out of Ukraine, where countries around the world are in short supply.

Since the fighting began, major Ukrainian ports, including Odessa, have been blockaded and there have been attacks on farms and warehouses.

Before the war, 10% of the world’s wheat, nearly 18% of corn and half of the world’s sunflowers were supplied by Ukraine.

But about 25 million tons of corn and wheat are now at risk of rotting in bunkers, and food prices have risen globally since the war began.

Some 47 million people around the world in Ukraine’s export-dependent countries are at risk of a humanitarian catastrophe.

On Sunday, rocket attacks continued to rain on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, and Mr Johnson warned the country was on a “blade”.

Mr Johnson is expected to call for an international solution to the crisis, including finding overland routes for grain exports.

The UK has urged Turkey, which controls access to the Black Sea, to do more to get grain supplies out by ship.

Only Putin can end war

Mr Johnson will say G7 Leaders then: “Putin’s actions in Ukraine are creating terrible aftershocks around the world, driving up food and energy prices as millions of people are on the brink of starvation.

“Only Putin can put an end to this futile and futile war.

“But global leaders need to regroup and apply their combined economic and political power to help Ukraine and make the lives of households around the world easier. “

The Prime Minister also wants G7 leaders to consider the use of cereals as a source of biofuel, arguing that using cereals to power vehicles could reduce availability.

The UK will also invest £1.5 million in the development of a test procedure to determine whether cereals sold by Russia was illegally imported from Ukraine.

Last week at Government Meeting of the Heads of the CommonwealthMr Johnson announced an extra £372m for the countries most affected by rising global food prices.

“We talk about this every day with our partners. There have been some agreements. And the partners need to move faster if they are really partners and not observers.

“The delay in the delivery of weapons to our state, any restriction is really an invitation to Russia to strike again and again.

“The occupiers – these terrorists – must be beaten with all our might so they don’t think they can pressure and defeat someone.”
