Futuristic portrait photography lighting using a secret ingredient

Miguel Quiles is a studio portrait photographer who specializes in creating beautifully lit portraits with a lot of emotion. In this video, he walks through the setup and settings for this sci-fi-inspired visual.

One of the most helpful for beginners is instructions on how to set up the light correctly with the position and angle of the lights. This setup uses a unique combination of three v-flats, two Rotolight Aeos 2s, one Nanlite 720 W light and a Westcott optical point to create precise slits on the model’s eyes.

Miguel also used Lasolite tri-ray glasses to capture the light in the model’s eyes. Spotlights are important to help bring life to your subject’s eyes, which is especially important in dark photos like the one created in this video.

Miguel also goes over the camera settings and why he chose specific settings. Throughout the video, he has helpful pop-ups with tips on different camera settings that can be applied in a variety of situations. Another helpful tip he mentioned is to adjust the white balance before you start. While white balance can be adjusted in post-production with relative ease, when you’re shooting with color and gel, you can create creative color blends in-camera for different effects. Finally, Miguel adds a tool that not many people use in their shots but certainly creates a powerful effect, especially when shooting with color.
