Frankfurt prosecutors are conducting raids in Germany, Italy and Hungary as part of an investigation into suspicions that Suzuki’s diesel cars are equipped with a beating device.
The raids are taking place today amid an investigation that is targeting employees of Suzuki Motor Corp., Stellantis NV and Marelli Corp., Frankfurt prosecutors said in a statement on Wednesday. The companies did not immediately respond to email requests for comment.
Prosecutors are looking into allegations that Suzuki sold more than 22,000 SX-4 S Cross, Swift and Vitara models with engines equipped with a beat-up device that controls readings of emissions outputs. Buyers are not informed that the vehicle does not meet European legal standards. Prosecutors said the engines were delivered by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which now belongs to Stellantis. The software is believed to be provided by Marelli, according to the statement.
Frankfurt prosecutors conducted the search in cooperation with their counterparts in Italy and Hungary, coordinated by Eurojust, the European Union’s judicial cooperation unit.
