Frank Warren will ask WBC to appoint overseas officials for Fury-Whyte
The outburst from the undisputed title war between Josh Taylor-Jack Catterall last weekend could affect another major all-England clash.
On April 23 at Wembley Stadium, Tyson Fury will defend his WBC heavyweight title against mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte. Queensberry Promotions won bids to host the contest, and Fury’s co-promoter Frank Warren said he didn’t want British officials working in the fight.
Three UK judges scored the undisputed super-lightweight title fight in Glasgow, which ended in a controversial split victory for Taylor. The British Boxing Control Board will review the scorecards.
“I think he [Catterall] won, he’s the busier boxer,” Warren told Boxing Social’s Andi Purewal ahead of yesterday’s Fury-Whyte press conference, which the opponent declined to attend.
“I think one of the judges’ scorecards is just too ridiculous. My problem with the scoring situation is that no one is held accountable. If they were a football referee, they would be demoted but not just move on to the next person. I hope the Board of Supervisors pulls their finger out and does something about it. “
Warren later added: “I don’t want British officials for this war [Fury v Whyte]. I have British officials it is cheaper. I don’t have to pay for a plane ticket; I don’t have to do all of this, but I will ask the WBC to appoint overseas officials.”
